Swashbuckling Adventures: 7th Sea d20 review

Re: Courtier class

I would be very interested in hearing how this confusion started so it can be avoided in the future.

This "confusion" probably started when I was asked to write a class called the courtier for the 7th Sea d20 book. It continued when I went forward to write it based on some notes I had for just such a class. The problem only got worse when I turned it in to AEG and was subsequently mailed a check for my efforts.

And then, in the penultimate chapter of this epic saga, they proceeded to publish the book.

In the final stroke of my campaign of terror, I cloaked my endless ambition to steal all the credit for everything ever published behind the facade of trying to be helpful and perhaps spark an additional sale or two of this book.

Perhaps they used the courtier from Rokugan in place of the version I wrote. I honestly have no idea. The information I provided in what is apparently my endless quest to steal the work of others was based on a file I have on my laptop. I haven't seen the finished book.

Hey, have I mentioned lately that time I wrote and designed d20 Call of Cthulhu? Did you guys like that one or what?

Anyway, I have to get back to work. I'm releasing another book under one of my pen names, "Gary Gygax."

Mike: I love you, man! Even if you are making my co-workers wonder if I'm having a nervous breakdown. :)

Must... regain... composure...

Dastardly fiend!

No, I'm just kidding Gaming Overlord (TM).

Personally, I was especially fond of your invention of Vampire: the Masquerade.

Even your slumming work, like say the creation of Mage Knight, Magic the Gathering and Chess, is pretty good.

PS: Keep on keepin' on stealing that credit. OH YEAH!!!!

(snip needlessly sarcastic and defensive post about accusations that didn't happen)

Ahem. Thanks for the laugh, but no one was accusing you of anything. I was just personally confused, since to the best of my knowledge things went differently. That's why I (wonder of wonders) asked about it. I don't think anyone would be so stupid as to attempt to claim credit for widely-circulated books if they didn't have a valid reason to do so, hence the question itself. I apologize if I have wasted your time by not outright accusing you of lying - next time I'll get right to making baseless accusations so you can have a better position from which to act as an innocent and wounded party.

Boring! Nobody really cares who wrote which class, only if they are good or not. The 7th Sea courtier, IIRC, is identical to the Rokugan one. So Mike got paid for something that wasn't published and not having seen the book, thought it had been published. Big deal. Doesn't sound like an X Files conspiracy to me, LOL.

So, can we please get back to talking about the merits and flaws of the actual book rather than this lame tangent? Sheesh! :p

Seth,

Your original post served well enough for me to put together a rather amusing send up of it and you.

No need to apologize. There was more than enough there to work with.

Wow, it's been a long time since I witnessed someone actually literally getting their butt handed to them. Normally I'm not a big fan of flaming people but, my goodness, it certainly appeared deserved to me.

Eric,

In light of all you've done for the d20 community, that means a lot to me.

Everyone else,

Since AEG had the shortsightedness and poor editorial judgement to cut my version of the courtier from the book, I'll post it on my web site tonight (with enough changes to avoid being sued) after my D&D game and place an announcement in the publishers form. Sorry if any information I posted prompted anyone to buy the book under false pretenses. I'll think twice in the future before speaking up on AEG's behalf.

Edit: By no means do I wish to disparage the courtier class in that book. I've never read it, and have no idea what it looks like. I do, however, quite like my version and wish for it to see the light of day.

My favorite part was "I don't recall a 'Mike Mearls'..."

I mean, my god, you're in d20 publishing and you don't recall "a 'Mike Mearls'?"

And your company published Evil and Monsters, both of which have contributions by Mike Mearls right there in the credits, and you don't recall "a 'Mike Mearls'?"

Baffling.
