Do you swear during play at all? Some groups it's acceptable, but others....

I know I am given to curse a bad roll under my breathe, but I was wondering about everyone else.

Well some nights everything goes wrong

I try to avoid it as their is a 11 yr old in one of our groups, but when you've blown your third straight will save or haven't hit didily in the last 4 attacks it is inevitable that I will let out a exclamation of filth.:D

i work with children a lot in the real world and i am amazed at how quickly my language filter kicks in. otherwise i frequently sound like i was raised by drunken sailors.

but we all know mom wasn't a sailor.....just a drunk :p

Right now, I'm GMing a d20 Modern game set in the Fallout universe. Swearing is integral to the Fallout experience, just like drugs and gratuitous violence.

Players can swear in character... but the things that are swearing in the game aren't swearing to modern American culture. "Frey's daughters!" isn't much of a curse in America. :)

As for what we would consider swearing, I try to keep a lid on it.

It varies by NPC. Some NPCs are polite types and some have the foulest mouths imaginable. My players are all in their 30's so there's no worries there, but they can get pretty obscene at times. The worst offender by far is my wife, who can make drunk sailors cover their ears.

So I guess "A lot" would be the correct answer.

I probably swear more in character, than out of character.

Unless I'm gaming with those who would be offended by it, then I leave it be.

And I just use normal american swears in D&D, which is maybe a little silly, but no one seems to mind. It just feels a lot better to me, saying a normal swear, than cursing the darkness. Well, generally. Depends on the game!

Modern games, no compuncture, there's just a lot of swearing. What else do people do when they're getting murdered, anyway? Not that it's better that way, it's just how many modern games I've played have gone, and how people have been happy with it.

It mainly just depends on the group.

However! I did play in a star wars game for a little bit, where the DM proclaimed, hey, there's no swearing in star wars. Nobody there was offended by swearing or anything, it was just a style issue.

Hmm. Maybe I should make it a style issue for my own D&D games. Finding a better in-game swear might be more fun than just having my character mutter something colloquial.

But, there's also just something about having a character use a term that everyone can connect to, and follow what the character means. ah well, I'll try the other, I think!

Agreed on the swearing in fallout, though. It just wouldn't be fallout without it, really.

buttercup is playing a sun priestess in my tuesday night game and she has run a whole list of "balcla" curses by us. it has been fantastic, i think it has really added something special to her character and our game :)
