D&D 5E Sweet! My BBEG's are immortal now!

They had the spell in first edition too. Manshoon popped all his clones at once when he was murdered by Fzoul. They then battled like Highlander across Faerun. Clones are never a solution. They only ever create more problems.

Wow. For an ed notorious for nerfing spells, that's quite a major upgrade from the old-school Clone I remember.

The spell states that it puts ability scores as they were, just no equipment.

So my earlier statement about Str, Dex, and Con was off base.

This is ok for PCs, but not that great.

I see this as a way to get money out of the PC wizard. If he dies, chances are that the rest of the party would have raised him anyway. Now, he probably has to travel part way around the world with subpar equipment, just to get back to the party.

Raise Dead is 500 GP. This is 1000 GP a shot plus 2000 GP for a vessel (which presumably can be reused) plus traveling costs. Teleport and Wish are back to being risky, so he might have to hoof it.

Yup. And soul.

Now quite sure what its Str, or Dex, or Con scores are if those were bumped via leveling (assuming a DM levels his NPCs).

Does it say what happens to the old body? That could be a great way to convince people the old wizard died if the old body stays around.

It becomes inert. Best I can tell, your plan to rule the world with a younger version of yourself while everyone thinks the old guy is dead is on track.

It was always more of a tool for evil NPCs to cheat death..

My group is going to track down and find the evil wizard dead and be so happy. And then a young and talented apprentice Wizard is going to seek the party wizard out for learning and tutelage.

What kind of loser becomes a Lich when this is an option?

Best I can tell, only Wizards (and Sorcerers casting Wish) can currently get it. Other spell casters like Clerics might need the lich ritual for immortality. I don't see any Miracles or other type spells.

Course, it's not easy to protect the clone. Spells like Permanency are gone, so no more putting a couple of permanent protection spells around the clone.

Leomund's Secret Chest does not say what happens if a clone hidden in the chest suddenly comes alive (the chest can only originally contain nonliving material).
