It's still pretty iffy, it sounds to me like you could only have one of them cooking at a time, so once you zap into the new one you need a while to make another backup during which you are vulnerable. Also, might be some complications to showing up as a younger version of yourself without your fancy gear and being taken seriously by your former underlings. And if you tell them about the clone in advance, any assassin is going to know as well and kill the clone first. Lots of room for complications, which makes for interesting stories.

Easy to solve.
A wizard could easily wear a mask around underlings. The voice would be similar enough.
There's also Disguise Self or other illusions.
The wizard would have the knowledge about his underlings and could easily convince them. It that doesn't work, then maybe Magic Missile would get their attention.
The tough part is protecting the clone. A non-enterable secret room far from your normal base might work, but that would require Telekinesis to move big rocks (during construction, but 1000 pounds is not a lot) and a space (where you would have to change the air once in a while) where you could Dimension Door to and from. Sequester and Symbol and Glyph of Warding could be used to protect the body, but it's really not a sure thing.
Maybe the best thing is to make friends with the Elves and have your clone in one of their hidden vaults. Elves has some really ancient magic to help with this type of thing.

I believe the idea is that clones don't last forever. Maybe a few centuries, but after that many clonings, the body becomes weaker and weaker. I think that was Acererak's deal.
