really, I hand't heard of that. Do you possibly mean the Mesopotamia books mentioned in DaveStebbins' post?

I like Nyambe, and plan to use it as source material for the Africa-like regions of my homebrew world. However, as it has modified Elves and Dwarves, and the original poster asked not to mention such settings, I left it off my list.

[Edit: Although, I consider the "elves" of Nyambe different enough that they just should have called them something else.]
i may be wrong, but i was under the impression that the nonhuman PC races in Nyambe are all based on actual African myths and legends, but equated with the closest equivalent core D&D race.

if that's true, calling them just "elves", "dwarves", and such isn't quite accurate.

I think they were indicated as being such for player-to-race recognition. They are quite different.

That's why I edited the post and pointed out that they were different enough that the name "elves" barely fit.

One of the latest submissions to Diamond Throne is something like what you're looking for. It's REALLY cool, albeit short. Here's the description:

Dominion is a landscape where nations worship idols, which – after many weeks of prayer and thousands of heads bow in worship – become immense, living gods. Where war between the hundreds of nations is a pastime of kings and idol-gods, and magi speak in the epic tongue of the Creator, bringing ruin and wonder to the great continent of Mhahane. Armies assemble in lines of bronze and animal-hides, and nations bid, steal and destroy for the right to wield iron. Gods raise and twist the creatures of the land into monstrous creations of their own. Heroes are born to a fate formed by pestilence, sorrow and the horrors wrought by the enemies of peace . The few stand against the many. The walking gods, their followers and minions tear joy from Mhahane, their magi are ordered to steal the life from the land, and the cities of the living become ruins for the dead.

In the east, the wise see a shape in the stars, a sign of one who will come to rule every nation. All Mhahane will be his dominion. Hope may one day come to the world, but the heroes of the present must create the path so that destiny has a place to arrive.

EDIT: I should note that it's mostly based on Biblical stuff, in case that turns you off (or is a selling point).
