Not everyone dully accepts having their fantasy archtypes spoonfed to them.
Some of us seem them as mere starting points and strive for something more unique and flavorful - an attempt to stand out from the crowd of "standard" sword mages. Some do it through role playing, some do it by working against type, or finding a unique weapon or schtick that will work with the class. If you are good at it, you are just as effective or moreso than the "standard" versions of the class.
In short, your rant is ill-founded and short sighted. And not creative at all.
