Takeing 10 on D.D.

(some rule technically incorrect examples follow, but relevant nonetheless:) Do you allow fighters to take 10 on their attack rolls? Do you let mages roll average damage? Do you let clerics do average healing? I thought not.

Disable Device is a very special skill. Since traps have CRs, they are a challenge. A challenge is a threat. A threat threatens the rogue. When threatened, you can't take 10.

Rav

If that's the way you feel, fine. If you want to consider ALL disable device rolls (for traps, anyway) as being under a threat, go right ahead. More power to you - this is not even a house rule, just a rather narrow interpretation of "threat."

Actually, since "threaten" is a term that actually has a specific meaning in D&D, it's more than just a narrow interpretation of "threat," since really there's not much to be said in favor of interpreting well-defined terms to mean things other than their definitions. Unless you're saying that the rogue is in the trap's threatened region for melee attacks, and that the trap can make attacks of opportunity.

Whether disarming a trap is "distracting" is another matter, but I personally think the notion that there's anything inherent to the Disable Device skill that prevents one from Taking 10 sound rather contrived, indeed.

It says you can't take 10 when threatened. It does not say you can not take 10 when in a threatened area. This is clearly "flavour" text in my eyes (especially because the distracted part is mentioned in the same breath). Of course, YMMV, and while under heavy archery fire and magical barrage, your rogue may take 10, since he isn't "threatened"... fine with me... (sarcastic undertone)

;) ;) ;)

I think Rav has a good point about the Cr and the fact in my own campaign I don't let mages take 10 even for stuff like Spellcraft when they see a spell with detect magic or other similar unthreatened times. Allowing the rogue this ability to take a 10 would go against what I have done for the rest of my game. Thus for sheer rules I still think that they could take a 10, at least by soem interpations. I know in my own world they won't be given the opurtunity to and I have a clear arguement to base it on. Though most of my players are cool and as long as I am consistent they seem to be happy. Thanks Rav
