Taking 20 on Open Lock

Of course, it the lock is TRAPPED (for example, "fail your open lock by 5 or more and get stuck by a poisoned needle") ... it's fair to assume the Rogue simply triggers that trap (and spoils his take 20, as a result). ^_^

I don't think such a trap exists in the core rules (altho it does make some sense, traps cannot be triggered by open lock attempts AFAIK).

it's fair to assume the Rogue simply triggers that trap (and spoils his take 20, as a result).

Normally you simply cannot take 20 in that case.

You can still take 20, you just automatically trigger the trap. *edit* There is still no penalty for failing to pick the lock, since even if you rolled and succeeded you would still get whacked by the trap for interacting with the door/lock. (If that's what the trigger for the trap is)

Yeah... I wouldn't be saying to the Rogue, no 'take-20' on that door..

Rogue: "Oh... so it's trapped then. Thanks!"

But what if he took 20 searching for the trap before ;) .

If the trap's trigger is "fail to pick the lock" then yes there would be a penalty for failure in that instance. However since OL is a skill that by default can take 20, then you take 20, roll a 1 on your first attempt and go from there. ie: you eat the trap. I think the text stating that taking 20 is like rolling a 1, 2, 3, etc is still in the 3.5 rules.

Rolling 1, 2, 3, ... is just a common explanation and surely the reasoning behind Take 20, but the attempt is treated as a roll of 20, not as 20 rolls of 1 thru 20.

However, the text about Take 20 actually says, that if you attempt it with a skill that incurs penalties upon failure, you will automatically receive those penalties (example, disable device and trigger trap).

It also says, that you can (only) Take 20, if the skill carries no penalties for failure. ;)

Sortof contradictory.

It also says, that Open Lock is a common Take 20 skill.
