taking one lvl Ranger to be able to use wand?

Fangor the Fierce

Ok, simple enough, can a Fighter8/Barbarian2 take one level of Ranger to be able to use a Wand of Cure Light Wounds? That spell would be on the spell list of the Ranger, yet he doesn't gain spells until 4th level. So, what's the verdict? Anyone know?

Yes, this is legal. The rules do not say you must be able to cast the spell, it simply says that it must be on your class list. So go ahead.

I would be careful to make sure that one level will not cause you experience point loss in the future on account of multiclassing penalties (assuming your DM takes those into account). Additionally, although you would lose a single point of BAB you might consider taking a level of cleric or Favored Soul instead. Both of these classes would actually give you some spells to cast. The cleric is a nice addition because of the possibility to use a divine metamagic feat if you should find one you like. The FS is a nice addition because it helps with the saves on top of spontaneous casting. The ranger will give you a point of BAB and Favored Enemy, though. So I'm not criticizing that - just merely making sure you consider all your options as to which will be the truly more beneficial.

Yes, I was looking at the Favored Soul, for flavor, since it is more battle oriented. Then I came back to Ranger, due to the Track Feat, which might be needed. I was able to come out with more skill points, better BAB, the use of the wand, a favored enemy, and nice saves.

Favored Soul is still up in the air, as I do like it's saves, plus the spells. I would have to change some stats, as it needs a pre-req of CHA 11 to be able to use the first level spells, and with the build I had, CHA was only 10. INT 13, for feats, STR 17, DEX 14, CON 14, WIS 10. 34 point buy. I could mess around with the numbers to find something suitable though... I might change DEX to 13, CHA 11, and on level 4, take the advance in DEX...
