Tallarn's GenConUK Report! (now with photo link)

I think beer had been involved, but don't quote me on that. :D

I pretty much agree with what everyone has been saying, the con was badly organised but fun despite that!

S'mon does indeed smile too much, and his fabled Black Dice of Death came up trumps for him again ("OK the city guard makes an attack with his halberd...natural 20, that's a threat, obviously, natural 20, that's a critical...the mercenary goes down, blood gushing from a wound in his chest"). Upper_Krust and I will have to continue or semi-serious rivalry next year (and someone still owes me a pint, as promised!).

I really hope I can make Amsterdam next year, but one of the problems will be that I'll just want to look round Amsterdam as much as I'll want to play in games!

I'd like to go next year, but the problem is that if it's about teh same time as it was this year, I'll also be needing to prepare for my finals for my degree (!)...

Yes, and? :D

PUT GAMING FIRST! GAMING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAT JOB PROSPECTS!

Says the man that roleplays in a professional manner :)

Tallarn, If you wanna look round amsterdam, you just need to get over to the mainland. Plenty of spare beds in my place to sleep. Its only an hour long train ride to get to amsterdam from my place :) When you take ryanair, you could get here ( and back) under €50.

When I looked at my bank balance yesterday, I had roughly £200 left in my OVERDRAFT. So money is a wee bit tight right now. But I shall be getting a job and stuff, I shall. Plus I intend to work during the show in York.

Well know that the offer stands!

When is the play in york starting? ( Isn't that work though?)

June 15th is when rehearsals start, play itself starts at the beginning of July. It's work, but not very well paid. :) I'm off now to follow up some possible jobs, see you all later!

I spent most of the Easter weekend visiting family in Amsterdam this year and only made it to GenCon on Monday afternoon. The trade floor looked pretty empty and there were a fair number of games going on upstairs, but about a third of the tables were empty.

There's something about gaming conventions that always makes me feel slightly light-headed. The sheer concentration of a large number of role-players all packed in to a relatively small area seems to bend space and time :D Or perhaps it was simply exhaustion from visiting family. I agree that you get a lot more out of the convetion when you are not walking around half-asleep.

I think you hit the nail on the head for the poor attendance, for most people Easter is a family occasion. Even if you arn't religious, then your none-roleplaying family and friends are also off work at that time so people make plans together. I missed out on a family dinner and a trip to Wales with the wife due to Gencon, if its Easter again next year I probably won't be going.

At work in our team weekly meeting we have a 'around the table' part where everyone talks briefly about what they are working on. This week I suggested we each person describe what they did over the Easter bank holiday weekend and every person in the team had spent at least one day visiting family or entertaining family at their house. Perhaps in future the GenCon Europe can be scheduled for a different time of year.

Bagpuss, sorry I missed you during the GenCon weekend. I hope that my room was not too messy, we're getting a cleaner soon :D It's good to hear that you had a good time at convention. If you're interested in coming down for DragonMeet at the start of December - then you're more than welcome to stay over.
