[Tavern Thread] The Dunn Wright Inn

[sblock=mowgli]
here is Heinrick's background:
Was sent away from father and mother in the baronies because of a
mishap involving teenage angst, a baron who took perverse pleasure in bulling
his subjects around, namely his parents who taught him the wizardly skills,
and a very well studied burning hands. The baron survived, though heavily
scarred. Mother and father sent him to his uncle in Venza for fear of his life.

thoughts:

it is possible that this same duke or one of a near by ducy (dookey? ha!) is the one that heinrich was spirited away from to save his life. What do you think? They could possibly know each other.

Mortar looks over at the curious little halfling asking for assitance and with a draw from his ale he stands, making his way to Tilsit Dimplecotton. "Ye a halfling wearing shoes..." Mortar pauses and looks at the halflings shoes "curious one aren't ye? Anyways Master Dimplecotton, I am here to answer yer request. I am Mortar Foehammer, ranger of the Sethir Mountains." Mortar finishes the last of his ale. "I just need to know where yer velvet was last seen and who else is coming.

"Ah, yes, the velvet. I was able to meet up with a fine gentleman from Caira. It's one of the smaller of the Landadel Baronies, I believe, but their work with a loom? Fabulous! I couldn't believe my luck when he told me that he knew a Caira weaver just finishing a gorgeous cloth. The prices were exorbitant, however, and he crassly demanded a king's ransom for the fabric! But oh, your uncle Tilsit never backs down from a challenge, oh no no no! I simply demanded that he deliver the velvet to me as soon as possible, just as soon as last night! He blanched. My goodness, I never saw a human go quite that shade of chartreuse so quickly! He stuttered in shock, saying the delivery could never go so quickly, but I reminded him that I had other suppliers, and that if he couldn't meet my schedule, I could just as easily turn to a bolt of lesser price on the more leisurely schedule. Greed got the better of him in the end, and he agreed. Ah, the tragedy of human nature! No offense to present company, of course! As to where the velvet is right now, it is undoubtedly on the path to Caira from Venza. Simply take the main road east out of town, turn south at Baron's Cross, follow the path around the Tenebrous Wood and... Oh, oh dear... I suppose if they were desperate enough, they could attempt to go through the Tenebrous Wood... oh, but that would be treacherous... O tragedy! O agony! Will I ever receive my velvet!"

Yo listens intently to the Halfling. "Hmmm... The Tenebrous Woods... That would be risky." Turning to look at Mortar, "We could the follow path up the these woods. If we don't find the delivery along the way, we can investigate the shortcut path through these woods." Turning back to the Halfling, "I don't think we can guarantee we'll find the cloth that you are looking for, but we can check the route and the woods for you. How much would you pay for such an endeavor?"

Mortar listens to both Yo and Master Dimplecotton. "Aye, sounds like a plan. If the courier has left the trail I could simply track them to their current position and resolve the issue." Mortar scratchs his beard. "But it is likely that the courier has been delayed due to trouble from wildlife or bandits. All that is left now is to find some more companions to go with us." Mortar stats as he looks around the tavern.

"Yes, payment, payment, payment, where are my manners?" Tilsit responds, rolling his eyes and fanning himself. "You can't buy ale and women with threats of violence alone..."

He settles down and explains, "Well, I had already delivered a ludricous sum to the Caira gentleman, promising the remaining payment upon prompt delivery. Since he has so utterly failed in his task, I am honor-bound to not let him touch a single copper of it. So, if you and whosoever you choose to take with you can fetch me the velvet, then I shall pay the lot of you that forfeited purse. It comes to 500 gp."

[sblock=Knowledge(Local)]
The Tenebrous Wood is home to bandits, monsters, the standard. It is surrounded by more civilized lands, with the exception of the expansive swamp to Venza's southeast. It is probably less dangerous than some of the horrors of the swamp, but that is no comfort to the standard traveling merchant.

OOC: In case you're wondering, this will be a short adventure; one of the LPF Side Treks.

Looking back at the Dwarf, "Yes, I agree. As much as I'd like to keep a larger share of the payment for myself, I think we should see if one of those priestly types or magic users are around and able to go with us. It's amazing how often having one of them along comes in handy. Possibly get both?" Yoshiki looks around the Dunn Wright for possible candidates.

Elenka, Human female Summoner

Elenka, sitting at her table with Franco, has been listening intently to the conversations with Tilsit Dimplecotton going on behind her. She smiles at the young Franco and sets her cup (not quite steaming so much as it was earlier) on the table. "My apologies, Master Atiradore, but I very nearly spent the last of my coin on this nostalgic drink and I really mustn't let another job slip past me." She reaches across and places her hand briefly on Franco's. "I hope we have the chance to talk again sometime." With that she pushes away from the table, collects her terbutje and approaches Tilsit Dimplecotton.

As Elenka approaches the halfling she is strapping the blackened terbutje to her waist. She curtsies and the heavy blade strikes the floor with a thud and nearly throwing her off balance. Embarrassed she straightens and a bright red flush, especially visible because of her naturally pale skin, creeps up her neck to color her face.

"Master Dimplecotton, I could not help but overhear your plight. I was immediately overcome with a desire to aid you; after all, without the finer things in life we are nothing more than animals. And if I can aid you in preventing the Venzans from sliding into barbarism then, surely, I should do so." Elenka smiles and dips her head with a bit of modesty. "If I may say so, I have some small skill at magics and I have the protection of the Chernyj Wood; perhaps it will provide some modicum of protection in this Tenebrous Wood of yours, should we be required to enter it."

Franco also rises as Elenka stands. "Oh, yes . . . um . . . of course! I'll likely be here on your return." He seats himself again in his corner and watches as his new acquaintance offers her services to the dapper halfling.

I suppose I'll be needing to take on a job fairly soon as well. I'm not used to having to actually work for a living; this could be vaguely unpleasant.
