TCotM: Tenebrynn's Idylls

"There are many many, maybe infinite, possible futures. Otherwise Chronomancy simply would not work. However, if you were sent forward in time, you would have arrived bodily, and then there would have been two of you in this timeline. This is not the case."

"What makes you so sure that this must be the only possible outcome of being 'sent forward' in time? For one, we are dealing with a forbidden art here, as you said yourself. Also, while it may be true for a technical term "sent forward," remember we are effectively lay people using lay terms. There are more methods than one that a layperson might call "sent to a place" or "sent to the planes," including such obviously incorrect methods like scrying to observe a place. Please don't think I don't understand your viewpoint - we are simply trying to look at both proposed scenarios here, and giving them their due attention."

"Well, as to the amnesia...it is, as I said before, possible that it is originally temporally caused, in which case, the correct terminology would actually be sending backwards or perhaps regressing backwards is better, rather than sending forward. Particularly, if your minds were regressed backwards to the point you all recall, it would make sense, and that is clearly possible if you think of the mind as a finite state automaton and follow the transitions backwards to a particular point in time....Hmm, of course, the theoretical implications of that assertion are profound."

"What annoy me must, it is Elektra. Whichever theory is true, that our mind have lose the memory of the last ten years or that we have been moved ten years foward in a timeline by the Crux, on thing is sure for the moment, it is the four of us memories break at the moment we were affected by the Crux. So why Elktra, who was also affected during the fight against Sin, isn't affected now?"

"Who knows? Maybe it only happens a certain percent of the time when exposed to the Crux effect? In some other possible future, all of you might have been fine except Elektra, or maybe just Vanitri and Elektra were affected, etc, etc. There are 2^5 possibilities."

"There is just one problem in your way of thinking, Laynie. It is that you consider that is a coincidence. I hardly believe in such things. That's a reason why i'm successful in business, it is I let no place to such thing as coincidence or chance."

"What about state of mind? Was destroying the Crux an active thought as you approached the Crux? Danger assessment on part of the Crux? We've seen it take Rinaldo's rapier before the closer sunrod. There are better variables than pure chance, I'd say."

"Oh that. From my studies of the Crux, it seems to have a limited ability to detect all possible futures within its aura, at least out to a matter of seconds. It seems to temporarily disperse those who pose a threat and hope that they won't pose a threat when they appear again. Have you heard of the psionic power Time Hop? It's a similar idea. Not at all dangerous to the person targeted, they are just dispersed for a brief while and then reappear."

"That sounds like the only one of us it could have really held at bay would have been Tenebrynn if the dispersion caused him to lapse in concentration. It seems to me that it would make more sense the other way round, the user 'time hops' and hopes that the threat it gone when he reappears, perhaps with a little extra that does encourage the threat to leave..."
As she says this, Ashnar wonders if she should bring up her crossbow bolt.
