Oracle of Shadows? Is that from H3? I haven't really read the third half of that module.
Sorry, I didn't properly clarify that was something of my own creation. The only way to have unimpeded communication with Karavakos is to perform a ritual upon a Shadowfell Rift. This Oracle of Shadows allows communication across any distance, on any plane, with a willing creature. Traditionally this ritual was used to commune with powerful servants of Orcus in the Abyss, hence the name. Since Karavakos (who is a rather powerful servant in my campaign, nearly an exarch) could only relay so much information through dream sendings (somewhat as it is presented in H3) he encouraged the cultists he had contacted to perform this ritual. What neither party knew was Orcus is privy to all of these communications.
The only one to come close to succeeding was Karavakos's tiefling descendant, Kalarel (as stated, another change of mine). She had found the proper number of sacrifices and had access to the rather powerful rift at the keep. Unfortunately, as it is written in the adventure, she was dragged into the Oracle. But her death triggered the Oracle and allowed the PCs to get a glimpse of Karavakos, who they know only as the Chained Prophet.
I plan on having Kalarel come back (using the Possessed Spirit template in Open Grave), so having him dragged out via the Thing int he Portal is pertinent to my needs.
I plan on bringing Kalarel back as well. I just haven't decided in what capacity yet.
A twisted web, indeed. Now, I just need to think of an appropriate fey guardian to drop into the final battle as the Court Fey's servant.
Very much so. But also very clever. It seems a neat and tidy way of tying in the fey that directly involves your former slave. Yet it gives a certain level of complexity that helps support good storytelling. Circles within circles.
At the end of KotS my party found a ritual book used by Kalarel, that had been gifted to her by a servant connected to the Prince of Frost. The Prince is allied with Orcus in the hopes of gaining more power and the Raven Queen's control of winter.
I hadn't been sure if I should add more of those overtones to H2. But discussing this with you has convinced me I should. A major servant of the Prince will be manipulating Paldemar to unleash darkness upon the Vale. Perhaps I will create a few more connections to make the story a bit more complex.
I had done a few things, to work Kalarel into the story. Instead of letters, Kalarel used skulls with Magic Mouths attached to them. So the PCs heard his voice giving directions to Irontooth. Also, at the Grave site, Kalarel had a skeleton that he was sending messages through/observing with. It wasn't an apparition, but it - again- spoke in his voice, as he was seeing/hearing through it.
The PCs also rescued a local girl who had been swayed by the cult to join (another plot hook), and so she has mentioned Kalarel a few times.
Brilliant touches. I like the skulls. I wish I had thought of that.
In my case, Kalarel and a band of adventurers came through town roughly 30 years before. They were there to crack open the keep but because of problems they had caused in Winterhaven, they were captured and executed. All them were buried in unmarked graves outside of town.
Kalarel eventually rose from the grave and made her way back to the keep. I plan on pulling her two accomplices in at a later date. Perhaps as threats to Winterhaven. I want to launch P2 from Winterhaven so it would give the party a good excuse to head back to town.
Of course, I also plan on altering P2 a great deal. The enclave will be an outlying community near Erelhei-Cinlu from Vault of the Drow (Vault of the Drow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) and the entrance will located in the Stonemarch.
But then, that is another story all together.
