I've lived in Pinellas County, across the bay from Tampa.
Lakeland is a quiet, nice place to live. I haven't been there in a while...but I do remember it being a little on the rural side. Not a lot going on in Lakeland proper, IIRC.
Some tips:
1. Do you like strip clubs? If so, you're in luck! I think we have more strip joints per capita than any other city east of Las Vegas.
2. Nice beaches (Clearwater Beach for fratboy-style hookups, St. Pete Beach for Jimmy Buffet-style serious liver damage)
3. If you are into clubbing, Tampa has one of the more vibrant club scenes in the state. I'm retired (thanks to Missus Wormwood), but I hear Ybor City is much safer now than it used to be in my club crawling days (89-91).
4. I don't know much about the job market (I haven't been unemployed since graduation), but I hear it's kind of soft right now.
5. Sprawl. Lots of sprawl (which I like, but shhhh). You NEED a car. There's no real public transportation aside from an anemic bus system, and the Tampa Bay area is extremely pedestrian unfriendly.
6. Real estate can be expensive (thank you land bubble), but there are still affordable places if you look for them.
