Tell me about your experiences with Elements of Magic

I know. I know. I'm not following the hot new trend and posting about the end of the world or something, but bear with me.

I saw the notice on the front page about the revised EoM and since I'm a sucker for variant magic systems, I succumbed and bought it. I haven't had time to read everything in detail, yet, though I've skimmed most of it. I like a lot of the ideas. Some of it I'm not sure about.

I'm wondering, though, about people who have used it in their games. How did it work out for you? What did you like? Not like? Any house rules with it? Enlighten me.

I've used the first version, but not revised. My experience so far with the revised consists of skim and print. I just bought it last night.

I briefly had a play-by-post game based on the old version, just so we could try it out. You can see if the link in my sig still works and read it for yourself, if you like. It seemed to work fairly well, actually, but the game fizzled, as PbP games usually do.

I have tried an illusionist in a pbem game, but the dm has dropped off the face of the internet. It was ok while it lasted, but like psionics, you have to learn to be a bit of a miser when it comes to points or you will run out of "pow" far too early.

Oh, and like most other games, the illusionist is a headache when you try to figure out what the "partially real" effects of illusion force and illusion nature actually do. The former was slightly alleviated with the second appendix (although it treads close to Evoke Life now), but I am waiting to see how that new spell list interacts with the feat Illusion Specialist or whatever it is called).

I did like the "2 free class skills" aspect of the mage. I think the list of benefits could be expanded a bit, but that is up to the DM, I guess.

Overall, I think it has potential, but still has a few bugs to be worked out, either by the creator or decided on between you and your DM ahead of time.
