temple prostitution

Sharess priests from the FR setting is probably also going to be doing something similar. As to prices, I'm not touching that one.

Rome gave out coins with postions on them so that their troops did not have a language issue.

Temples control it to make sure VD did not become rampant, also a way to control population.

I would base cost on chrisma. Chrisma being more than looks, if you get my meaning.

History/TLC the XY Factory, Sex in history has information that could be useful.

In one of our weekly campaigns, set in a modified Unther, we have temple prostitution, although we did never set prices. In any case, prices depend on the economy of your campaign - I'd look at the performance skill check tables for some guidelines, or just wing it.

Some other considerations.

Does the church/temple have a legal monopoly on prostitution? Do they use spells such as remove disease on the temple staff? How about on their customers?

Some churches the prostitutes where not actually part of the church priesthood but a separate and some times parallel organizations linked to/run by the church. If this is the case then the high priest/priestess would not be available or be available to just a limited number of important people.

Is the religion a major one in the lives of the people? Are boys expected to go there for their education? How about girls? Do they also go to the temple. There are a few primitive cults that required that everybody loose their virginity with a member of the church.

More spells that they use higher the cost. Greater their ties with the everyday lives of the people, lower the cost so that everyone can enjoy the blessing of the church.

A strong legal and social monopoly on the other hand might work both ways. It could increase the cost or lower it depending on many things.

Narisane...

My setting has one deity that fits the bill here. Here's her description, and a description of one of her temples...

Narisane
The Whore, Lady Seduction
Symbol: A nude. The vulgarity of the pose varies.
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Portfolio: Lust, Seduction, Coercion
Domains: Trickery, Seduction
Favored Weapon: The whip

The Power: The kind words for Narisane describe her as the "dark side of love." The rebellious second-born daughter of Cuane and Poen, Narisane is the only one of their children to become a goddess in her own right, and she rules over lust and seduction, coercion and lies. She is the abuser of the heart, the one who twists good will to dark ends. Still, Narisane has yet to become totally evil - but she is slowly slipping deeper and deeper into Senda's dark fold. Narisane is Chaotic Neutral, and most of her evil tendencies of late are more to spite her parents than being born of true malice.

The Ethos: Lust is the truest weakness of the human soul, and like all weaknesses it exists to be exploited. Pleasure is found in exploitation and controlling others through their emotions, thoughts, fears and dreams. Satisfy the dark urgings of others, but leave them hungry for still more at all times.

The Clergy: Most followers of Narisane are prostitutes. While Telzoa has not historically had that much of a taboo associated with this profession, the fall of Narisane to darkness and the changes it has incurred in her following has begun to darken the reputations of the “Ladies of the Night.”

And the temple, well, the description is a short snippet from the description of the city of Ultan...

“The Sensuous Respite” is commonly referred to as "The Whorehouse" by the locals. It is a temple to Narisane which previously was a whorehouse. The place was consecrated so that business could continue on religious grounds (The pun is intended). Skeptics point the place out often when they want an example of the ineffectiveness of the law in Ultan. Whatever is said however, Narisane has 56 followers and 12 priests at this temple under the leadership of Alexia Thenis (P10).

While not completely descriptive, the Palace of Eternal Ectasy is a temple devoted to the goddess Bast. It is located in the floating city of Grimspear, an unofficial city located off the Sword Coast of Faerun (Forgotten Realms). More information can be located at <Grimspear.com >.

Again, while its not official FR canon, I find the website well organized and creative.

Yes, I found that an interesting series. I believe the troops used to use the position coins as gambleing chips as well.

I imagine you could charge different prices for diferent positions. Use your imagination at what would be cheaper or more expensive. I agree that Charisma could be a good way of determining price, at least as a modifier.

Cost = charisma + position + church rank

IMO

One I found interesting from the shows was the WIFE's rights, if she was not being satisfied she could bring it up and the husband would be checked out! There was even a deamon/god for them! :)
