My nephew is a player in one of the same games I am - and that is pretty much his attitude. He is there for the hack 'n slash more than anything else, although to his credit he can be a good roleplayer when he feels like it. He's only 14, though, so I should probably cut him some slack. :)

It happens to be the same game as the magazine-reader, by the way.

14 is understandable. I wasn't much different from that when I was 14. The guy Ariel's referring to, though, was about 25 years older than your nephew...

forgot to add these ones...

14. Don't get upset when dice don't roll your way, it happens, move on. Don't be bitter if you character dies when you do something retarded that the rest of the group warned you about. Don't debate about the merits of your PC's god saving you from your own suicidial/sacrificial death; after all, when was the last time you donated anything significant to your god's church?

15. Don't heckle other non-lawful PCs with your LG paladin - at least *try* to stay in character.

Only one rule needed, really:

-1: Don't play with wankers

.. or something to that effect. Read that on RPGNet Forums.

You missed rule 0 of the board:

Don't say anything that upsets Eric's grandmother.

Won't we just call him "complete Idiot?"

I've seen the opposite of this way more often, so for the GM rules:

Do not focus solely on one character. Share the love.

I have to bring this up with my DM! His girlfriend plays, too, and I like to see the look on his face when I tell him the boarders "want you to share the love, honey".

Although my character might be hit by a deep-frozen cow from outer space at just that moment, for reasons not related to my demand at all :D

To do something productive, I'll add another rule:

Don't use player knowledge to improve your character's lot - especially not if you want to use the knowledge to EXPLETIVE DELETED the other characters up!

We had one such bastard. He regularly sought to "win" the game, and used player knowledge for it - stuff like the fact that the one guy is really a Ninja, something his character had no reason whatsoever to beleave. But the guy was curiously inquisitive about that character.
He also built his characters with the strengths and weaknesses of the other characters in mind, and made characters that downplayed these strengths and exploited these weaknesses.

Been there several years ago, dealt with that, dropped that game like a hot potato. ;)

:D Didn't think of it like that. Come to think of it, let's just drop that last line - one of the games I play in is my fiance's, and he is not to be "sharing the love" with anyone else in the group. ;)

A friend of mine was GMing an L5R campaign which included his girlfriend.

One of the newer players recieved a mission to marry miss Asako (the girlfriend's character).

She was pissed, but the rest of us found it terribly amusing :)

Great thread. I'd add a codicil, or new rule. If you aren't enjoying the game, discuss it with the DM, but away from the table. If one of my players is having trouble, I want to know about it. Maybe they want to do something new with their character, maybe they would enjoy an occasional flavor change, maybe they're having trouble with another player. But if you don't say anything, it never gets fixed, and you just bring all that crap to the table. Bah.

There's one exception to rule 5. Plenty of the folks I play with will come to the table and say "I had a rotten day. I need to hit something." They don't let the bad day affect their play, but it gives a signal to the DM. Maybe a spare kobald just wanders across the player's path, looking tasty and in need of a kick in the crotch.

0. I will only play with DMs I can intimidate or push around, or who are overly nice guys who will let things slide so as to not make a scene.

1. My Half-Dragon Ranger/Cleric/Monk is undefeatable and don't you forget it.

2. I will frequently use information out of obscure books that only I have access to and if necessary misrepresent the information to my advantage.

3. All magic Longswords are mine, get your grimey little elf hands out of the treasure pile. Matter of fact I get to take everything I want first (even if I am not there for the adventure)any other outcome will cause me to instantly sull up and do everything in my power to ruin the game.

4. Not only will I use player knowledge to advance my character, you should expect me to look up whatever monster we are fighting so I can use it's weaknesses to my advantage. Yes this might slow down the game at the start but don't worry Combat will be much shorter in the end.

5. If we are playing a store bought module I will make sure to read it myself before we start, if it's one the DM wrote I'll just dig through his papers next time he goes to the bathroom.

6. I will play X Box during the session if I loose interest in the game, this is the DMs fault not mine.

7. The person who host the game is responsible for food and drink.

8. I will never host a game at my house.

9. Did I mention that my Half-Dragon Ranger/Cleric/Monk is undefeatable yet? If something does happen to him I will make such a scene you will have to call the police to escort me home.

In a one-shot I played with a group of my husband's old gaming buddies, one girl was alternating between reading a "Wheel of Time" book and a Bible. Needless to say she had no clue what was going on at any given moment. I couldn't figure out what she was even doing there.

Ariel
We had a player who drew at the table. He still didn't always have a clue what is going on, but it was preferable to when he was always snoring through games.

We had a DM who drew weapons at the table. And I think sometimes he was close to falling asleep.
