drnuncheon, Thanee, and Al got my #2. Gosh, it's hard to think of hard puzzles....

Except that if nobody saves you, you are dead.

Does anyone have a puzzle that the Wizard can actually save himself without DM intervention?

Well, there was a reasonable chance of
somebody finding the bottle. I specified the village 10 miles downstream was a fishing village, and they would have lots of nets across the river to catch fish. I consider it very likely that the bottle would have been found.

What if it happened at night?

What if the bottle got broken on the rocks?

What if the fishermen are concentrating on their fishing and miss it?

What if the fishermen are busy and decide to do nothing?

The point is that the solution REQUIRES DM intervention, not just player capability.

And, in fact, the solution does not require the character to be a Wizard. He can be any class (in fact, this is an old conundrum that has nothing to do with fantasy roleplaying). He could also be in virtually any genre playing any rule set, not just DND fantasy.

Does anyone have a problem where only a Wizard can solve it and only with unique application of his spells (and DND spells at that)?

Without DM intervention? Like, you could ask the DM to leave the room, and when he returns inform him that you have solved the puzzle, killed the enemies, and gained the treasure? ;) Sorry, I'm being unnecessarily obtuse.

OK, let's work out a Merak's Puzzle #3:

You are a 1st level wizard. One of your 1st level companions has been duplicated by several dopplegangers and now there are five identical people looking like your companion.

Determine which of the identical people is your companion using a single first level spell.

Would Detect Magic help in this situation? What alignment is your friend? Detect Good/Evil might help as well... What are the rules regarding Dopplegangers and them giving away equipment? I mean, a Doppleganger can change into a person, equipment and all. Can they then give away their newly formed sword, armor, arrows, etc? If so, a Doppleganger could keep changing into that form and giving away these newly formed pieces of equipment and make a good amount of money doing so. If there is some rule on this (like they can't give away newly formed equipment as it is "part" of that new form), then I would simply ask each "friend" to hand me their items. The ones that refuse must be Dopplegangers...

I don't know how to black out my text. But, here's my answer:

Line them all up and cast color spray. The one that falls unconscious is your friend.
