Defines how clear a signal is, and how stong/loud, on a scale of 1-5....

from the aviators glossary

Five by five is an expression used in aviation (and maybe other)
radio communication to indicate the quality and loudness of received voice
transmissions. Rated one to five indicates - first figure - clearness and -
second - loudness. Five by five means that a transmission is received clear
and loud (in clear words usually loud and clear is used...). One by one, on
the other hand, means it can hardly be heard and is not understandable. If
you have a loud but distorted transmission, you may hear two by five, and a
weak but clearly understandable one may be called five by three... The
definition of this must be included somewhere in a radiotelephony document
of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation)

Ashtal

Vengeance Bunny
5 x 5 ...

The phrase really entered the slang lingo thanks to Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

She'd say weird stuff, "Yeah, B. Five by five." The rest of the characters had no idea what she was saying, and at one point, Willow even goes into a rant about it to Tara.

And this is your Buffy trivia for the day!
SWOOSH!

Don't know about the Buffy thing, usually people picked it up from it's use in the movie Aliens, then of course the sound clip of the transport in the computer game Starcraft(which of course was most likely inspired by the movie).

This of course, assumes that you don't have a radio geek for a father and picked it up him (hehe).

5x5

I think 5x5 entered my lingo the first time I saw Aliens.

The scene was when the dropship was entering the atmosphere over the planet at the pilot (Ferro) says:

"We're in the pipe, 5-by-5."

I had that as my Windows start-up sound for a while. :)

And. like Ashtal, it entered my vocabulary when I was watching the third season of Buffy. :)

So many people who publicly admit to watching Buffy.

How sad. :(
I have so many friends who would agree, but I am a fan. The first 3 seasons had some of the best writing out there for TV. Season 4 was still solid, as for 5 and 6.... well, I still watch. ;)

Of course I have a thing for unattainable red heads..
