Hey All
Just wanted to give a big thanks to out very own JonRog (or however his handle reads) for the work he did on the Core. That's right, folks, I'm a fan of the Core. I've read the critics and, quite honestly, I absolutely disagree with them. I think they watched this movie, had fun, then realized "My god, I shouldn't like this movie! It's SF! Worse, it's SF that revels in being SF! Better give it a bad review just to be sure." I'm not the kind of person that cuts a movie slack just because it's SF, so I'm not saying this is a good movie for an SF movie. No, in my opinion this movie has some great acting, exciting moments and excellent writing.
And I've heard some cracks about the science in this movie. Well, I'm not a scientist, and what I do know about science has nothing to do with geophysics. I did study history in university, Scots history as a matter of fact. If I can sit through Braveheart, and actually enjoy it as entertainment--regardless of the huge steaming pile of sh . . . stuff it dumps all over the history and even the myths of the Scots Wars of Independence--those people who know something about geophysics should be able to get past whatever problems with science this movie has and enjoy it as entertainment.
And it is entertaining. Now, a lot of this can be attributed to the cast--and what a stellar cast it is--but there is some really great writing here. Even the minor characters get some good lines. "We have no sense of humour. And we're armed."
After seeing it on DVD, I went out and bought the DVD, I enjoyed it that much. I only bought it about three weeks ago and I've watched it four times, once for the director commentary and the rest of the times because its FUN. I mean, yeah it's fun but it also has some really emotional scenes. The one that always gets me? Delroy Lindo delivering the "I don't know what to do" line. Man, I don't know what it is but the frustration, pain, sadness and despair that he puts into those lines . . . I don't know, maybe it's just me.
In any case, I wanted to thank you, JonRog, for the work you put into this. And since I watched the "Making of . . ." documentary, I can put a face to the name.
