D&D 4E the 4e debate: a typology of players

8b. Both look like good games and will likely play both but of the two only 3e is D&D.

I agree that 4e is NOT D&D. I'm a bit of 6 and 1 or 2, cause I find reasons to like OD&D and 2e more for the fluff in previous editions and devotion to the game.

8 - I'll play 4e because it is new and offers a new perspective on a game I've liked for different reasons in every one of it's editions. That being said if a buddy comes in from out of town that I've not seen in ten years and says lets play some BASIC/AD&D/2nd/3.X edition - I'm down with that with little regret too.

I'm a big fan of this thread as it is a step in the right direction, analyse the problem before attacking it as you may find an option that dosn't require attacking it in the first place.

I don't know. Treating different opinions as problems to be solved (or attacked) is a bit disconcerting, as is generalizing individuals into categories. Why not just accept other people's opinions as there own and not worry about it? No one 'wins' anything by convincing other people to love or hate 4e, except obviously WotC.

I'm so totally a #9. 3rd edition took a huge step in the right direction, building upon what I love in D&D, and 4th seems to be doing the same thing. My top 2 D&D versions may very well shift from 3rd ed and OD&D to 4th ed and 3rd ed. Time will tell though, I'm no number 7. :p

Color me #10. I like the core of 4E, am happy with most of the changes and ecstatic about some. Still, there are some things about the overall direction that I dislike, and some nitpicky details that bug me. In the end, though, I've never yet been one hundred percent happy with any edition of D&D, and I like this one better than any that came before, so I'm buying it. :)

Incidentally, this thread is begging for a poll.

I'm strong #8 and a very close second #9.

Man, this should be a poll. You've really well defined it.

Cheers,

Note that these are ideal types only...not everyone fits into one neatly. They are meant to represent the types of arguments/positions I've seen. Also, the list may not be complete.

I'm trying to expose the variety of positions on the board to enrich understanding and to cut back on the "are you one of us or are you against us?" type of reasoning that can occasionally take hold when impassioned posters meet on what they see as a "pro. vs. anti" battle field. Some people might even use this as a model to understand their own positions better.
