D&D 4E the 4e debate: a typology of players

I'm feeling 8'ish with a side of 5... but still very excited to add 4th Edition to my D&D gaming. I am really looking forward to DM'ing 4th Ed. at GenCon this year. :)

Time will tell whether 4E is accepted as a "better" game than 3.5E or just a very different style. It's all subjective anyway.

Neat catagories, BTW. Agree with others who've said this should be in a poll.

Put 1, 3, 4, 8, and 10 in a blender, and you mostly have me. All you are missing is a dash of:

"Truth be told, sort of blaise about the whole 4E thing, but driven into a more positive opinion by the antics of some of the detractors."

There is probably a "driven into a more negative opinion by the antics of the supporters" group, too.

5 and 10 pretty accurately describe my concerns.

For me the game is less about what the book is and more about what I can make of it.

3e was much better than 2e + my house rules. (hell it even included most of my house rules as the new cannon).

4e is not better than 3e + my house rules (from what I've seen so far, when the book comes out we'll know for sure).

To be honest though, my most likely result will be to buy 4e and spend a few months porting the best of my house rules to the new edition and creating some new ones to fix the new 4e problems. No matter how bad it is I just like playing in a living, current edition.

The 2 & 3 mix. The game is getting both better and worse depending on how it relates to pre-d20 versions of the game. The overall comparison to 3e is still unknown. Certain other elements are steps forward, but they generally don't relate to the rules of the game. (e.g. online play)

I'm a bit of 9 and 10... Overall I think the games are improving (liked 3e better than 2nd, liked 3.5 better than 3e, looks like I'll like 4e better than all of those) with a few exceptions that will probably be adjusted for with a few house rules...

I forget: Is "grognard" an insult?
And if so, shouldn't we try to use insulting labels for the other "types" listed here as well, to be fair?
