D&D 4E the 4e debate: a typology of players

How about the:

"Sucker Born Every Edition" - The foolishly loyal "D&D Book of the Month" member who has amassed a large library of X or Y edition books only to find out the next edition of the game is not backwards compatible, rendering his "investment" obsolete.

I forget: Is "grognard" an insult?
And if so, shouldn't we try to use insulting labels for the other "types" listed here as well, to be fair?

Sure thing...I can't believe all the gamers that can't see the 4e'st for the 3e's. The whole "your edition is better than mine" thing got old when this website had its first run.

I'm partial to a 2, but 3/3.5 had its highlights. Not my game of choice, but I play it. Call me old school or early edition gamer (EEG), and leave the grognard term for someone else.

I certainly didn't mean it as an insult. . It's just that I've seen people refer to themselves as grognards with pride. Note also that there are two grognard categories...one pro-4e and one anti-4e so I am not trying to insult people I disagree with. Anyway, I can always change it to "old school" instead if people prefer that.

Hi bugaboo! I'm a 4oron, what are you?

I'm a solid 9 for sure; I love ALL editions of DnD and find them all fun, but each successive edition has introduced new things that I liked; 4e looks awesome, but is the direct result of 3e.

I think I'm very heavily falling towards the 8...

I'm varyingly interested in 4th Edition and then finding myself all kinds of 'meh' about it... But once the books are in my hands and I'm playing I'll see how I feel. As it is, I'm dealing with a group that varies between "4th Edition is teh bestest" and "Which edition are we playing right now?" So it's anybody's guess as to how things will work out.

10. "4e house-ruler" 4e seems flawed but an overall improvement. These folks are mostly sold on 4e but are annoyed at a few quirky additions/omissions in the new addition. The core of 4e appears superior to the core of previous editions. Problems like diagonal rules can be fixed. They might carry over some favorite house-rules from 3e. These guys are very similar to the "3e house-rulers" in style but disagree over which system is easier/more satisfying to tweak.

I thought you were going to miss me out, but yeah, that's pretty much how I feel. Though perhaps so ambivalent that I sometimes wonder if it would be easier to heavily house-rule 3.5E with 4E stuff than to house-rule 4E with various stuff.
