The 4th edition class list so far

I haven't followed every single news item word by word, but did they say there would be exactly 8 classes -- no more and no less -- in the first PHB?

I remember reading something about 8 classes in the PHB when news first started to trickle out, but at the time I think I read it as "at least 8 classes." Has it been explicitly stated that there will be only 8 classes?

is having something present in a playtest a confirmation that it will be in the player handbook? I don't think this is sound reason, and just speculation.

I don't know, but i do know that the phb got bigger. One can hope for more classes.

I hope we don't have two classes that start with "war-" in their names. But that's just me being ultra-picky.
Actually, if you'll allow me to be ultra-ultra-picky for a moment, there are actually two class that start with "warlo-". :p The similarity is a bit inconvenient/confusing and certainly an unusual decision, but it's nothing to complain about.

Actually, their will be *3* class that begin with Warlo-! You see, they're re-naming Druids to Warloam! :p

I haven't been able to keep up with the news as much as I would like, but I thought the barbarian was going to be included, and I also thought the ranger was a lock. Has anyone said anything that might indicate that the barbarian (or ranger) could be "built" using the fighter or warlord by way of skills/feats/talent trees/what-have-you?

As far as I know they haven't mentioned barbarians at all. The class seems like a prime candidate for conversion into a talent tree, but that's just my speculation at this point.

Pretty much the first we really learned about the roles was from James Wyatt's GemerZero intereview, so I'm surprised it's not cited yet.

Wyatt confirmed just about everything but the specific controllers. The defenders are the fighter and paladin, the strikers are the rogue and ranger, the leaders are the cleric and warlord.

First, talent trees aren't confirmed. In fact it was stated that there wouldn't be "talent trees" but there might be something in that direction.

Second, barbarians have been mentioned. Nothing really recently that I can recall though. There were quite a few references from the GenCon stuff.
