The 50 million dollar kid. (Piracy)

The article notes that the RIAA estimates that they lose $300,000,000 (300 million dollars) each year to piracy. If that's true, then this kid was responsible for 1/6 of the piracy that year. I think their numbers are flat out bogus.
Why do you think he's the one who got prosecuted? ;)

Still, you're combining two numbers -- the RIAA doesn't track losses of movies, which supposedly made up a substantial amount of this kid's $50 million figure.

I'd say his only major crime was selling the stuff he got. There shouldn't be much of a problem if it's for personal use only and not sold. I've seen many times where people have done that, selling pirated copies, usually of software, on ebay. Not to mention all those who sell vcds there and vhs at various conventions. Making a profit off pirated stuff is wrong.

Reminds me of an article in a detroit newspaper once. The article was about a drug bust. It mentioned the weight of marijuana captured, and then said the value. Because I was curious, I broke the price down to dollars per ounce. It turns out that the detroit police are paying way too much for weed! I think it was $200/ounce. Can't they get a bulk discount if you buy (well, not really buy but capture) by the ton?

I think that $50M figure is more likely not the value of the material, but based on the maximum amount by which you are liable per copyrighted work that has been infringed times the number of works.

And I don't remember off the top of my head how much infringing a single work can cost you, but I remember that I found it to be pretty ridiculous. I do remember that individual songs are considered seperate works, and that if you pirate an entire album it works out to hundreds of thousands of dollars. At that kind of rate, I can see how they could get to fifty million pretty easily.

there's a difference between having a few (or even a few hundred) MP3s on your hard drive, and having $50M worth of movies and music. obviously, this kid was selling this stuff, made a bunch of money, but got caught in the end.

The saddest part of this story is that there are people stupid enough in this world to pay for things that someone else downloaded off Bearshare.

Really, when will people learn?!

Ya! That's about as stupid putting their TurboTax info into their Bearshare shared folder! :p

*laffs*

I've gotten a few things from cons of stuff I, at the time, didn't have access to otherwise. I get alot of stuff for free, then if I like it, I'll go and buy it. I have little money to spend "willy nilly" on stuff. But I do own alot of cds, movies and gaming books. I've taped many a song off the radio "back in the day"..... So, I see this as a more modern way of that. I use this stuff for my own enjoyment.

It all boils down to greed. I will say that I have talked to a few bands that encourage the downloading and filesharing of their music. As long as you go to the concert they are getting paid. I dont think that works for movies though.

Um... perhaps... going to the movies...?
