D&D (2024) The 7 5.5e FRPG Subclasses Survived

Those were in the horror subclasses UA. This thread is talking about the 7 subclasses from the Forgotten Realms subclasses UA. The one with the moon bard, knowledge cleric, purple dragon knight fighter, oath of noble genies paladin, winter walker ranger, scion of the three rogue, spellfire sorcerer, and bladesinger wizard.

That is still eight subclasses though.
Oh that’s right. It’s been so long that I completely forgot about them. Maybe they took those 8 and pared them down to 7.

I have to imagine that the game mechanics were not the thing they were getting most of their responses on... it was probably entirely all about the Purple Dragon Knight's narrative conceit and whether or not a dragon pet subclass should be attributed to that organization specifically.

Whether or not that sticks around in the final book will probably be dependent on what kinds of narrative updates they gave to Cormyr as a nation and whether amythyst dragons have actually become important to the nation's military in the story.
I honestly.douvt they even got that much feedback on that front: probavly mostly "Neat, a dragon riding Fighter!"

If an upcoming story can explain the literal 'Purple (Amethyst) Dragon' etymology of the knightly order, and can do so in a way that is sensitive to the context of Forgotten Realms 'canon', is that enough to justify the draconic features of the subclass?

It is for me and I suspect that is what they are trying to do, but I do not speak for all FR fans, I think many will be reluctant, BUT if the story is good enough and makes sense many could be won over, maybe.

You have competing factors: the fraction of current players who care about FR lore is tiny (especially anything not mentioned in BG3). However, angry people are far more likely to respond to any survey than happy people.

That us not remotely true.
Which part, that only a fraction of current players care about FR lore, or that those who are angry about FR lord are far more likely to respond to any survey than happy people?

I think for these surveys the later is probably false. So many different types of people respond to surveys that I don't think this kind of survey has a disproportionate number of angry respondents.

But the former? Yeah. There are a metric crapton of players who came on board this game with 5e, and a lot of prior players who dropped out of 5e for other games or video games or even no games. So of the CURRENT PLAYERS, I'd agree with him that most don't care about FR lore because they're not even aware of FR lore.

WOTC has repeatedly said older hardcore players are not the primary audience for this game anymore. Doesn't mean they're intentionally ignoring people with deep FR lore, it just doesn't make economic sense to let the old older hardcore deep FR lore players dictate what they do with the game right now. If they thought the Purple Knights were kinda boring and didn't do much for the current primary game audience, it makes sense to change it even if it's not the old lore.

Either they forgot how many were in the FR UA document or something bit the bullet.

And if one did get nix, I wonder if the Purple Dragon Knight was the unlucky one.
