The Bard is... (plus, analysis of the ranger poll)

The D&D bard's archetype is...

  • Minstrel and storyteller, particularly of the Celtic variety

    Votes: 34 55.7%
  • Gypsy-like scoundrel, face-man, and fighting mage/thief

    Votes: 27 44.3%

I did a far more extensive survey on rangers than you did, and the spellcasting ranger was most definitely out. people prefer extraordinary and spell like special abilities.

New Poll: Choose as many as appropriate

The real reason Jack Daniel is posting these polls is:

A) He truly wants to find out what other people think of the ranger and the bard

B) He wants to tell you his opinion

C) He wants to insult and mock other people's opinions

Wow, so bards only have these two choices. I cannot honestly shoehorn my opinion of bard into either of those categories very well. He can be both or neither of those. A bard could be a seductress, enchanter or even a singing gondolier. The scope you have presented for bards doesn't even scratch the surface.

One of my favorite bards was a NE bard like the Phantom of the Opera... Scary little bugger, he was.

My choice would have been: Wandering historian, troubadour, minstrel, rogue, jack of all trades, and social gad-fly. Not necessarily all at the same time.

[sigh]

Jack, it looks like you were quite remarkable about 1) projecting your own preconcieved (and not commonly shared) opinions about the ranger onto the poll results, 2) not understanding (or ignoring) all the commentary in your poll and 3) being very insulting about folks that don't share your opinion that D&D tradition is the only way to define a character class.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this new poll, since you actually don't discuss it much at all, and the choices are even worse than your (bad) choices in the ranger poll. Look at Kahuna Burger's poll -- that's a good example of a useful one.
