Barry Ween, Boy Genius: collected in four graphic novels that just keep getting better as they go on (Vol. Four is the best of the lot.) You can't go wrong with a foul-mouthed 10-year-old who's the smartest person on the planet... especially when it's filled with dick jokes.

Okay, I was at a comic collectors show on Sunday and picked up the 1st volume of this based upon your recommendation.

But my real big prize from the show as a copy of Justice League of America #14 from 1962 for a mere $10.00! Nothing like picking up a copy of a comic book that was on the newstands the month I was born. And I'd rate the condition on it as either Fine or Very Fine, which means it has held up better over the years than I have.

Okay, I was at a comic collectors show on Sunday and picked up the 1st volume of this based upon your recommendation.

The first is the weakest of the lot, although still fun. The fourth is some astonishingly fine story telling, and the second has some amazingly fun stories. I'll lend you mine if you like, to see if you like them.

I just finished reading the Dark Horse reissue of Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo and the 10 issue run of 2001 Nights by Yukinobu Hoshino that Viz put out back in the early 90's. I picked up a few issues of Star Wars: Empire but lost interest quickly. The first four issues were ok though.

I used to be a rabid comic book fan, but kind of lost interest in the mid-90's as all the styles changed, and the mega-killer "Hero" became the rage. John Byrne's Next Men and Sandman were the last two comic series I was interested. I'll read and occasional Manga now but that's about it, the superhero genre is pretty much played out IMO.

Sometimes I miss comics. I stopped picking them up during 'the bad year'. And while I could afford to start them up again, I just haven't found the motivation. In retrospect, I found I wasn't really enjoying as many of them as I thought, and as I started to look more critically at what I was collecting during that time, I realized that in many instances, I was collecting on momentum alone (such as picking up the JLA and X-titles, even though I wasn't really enjoying them that much).

Maybe I'll go back and pick up the issues of things like Planetary, Powers and Astro City that I missed, 1602 when it gets collected and issues of JSA that I was enjoying...but for the most part, I'm not sure I want to get back on that wagon.

Comics are a lot more expensive than they used to be, and there are precious few that I can share with the kids, yet. (Which reminds me to pick up the Akiko collections).

Wiz - I kind of got that same feeling back when I was getting out of the comic book hobby.

Have John Byrne, Walt Simonson, Alan Moore, and Frank Miller been doing much lately? Preferably contained story work, graphic novels I suppose, instead of writing and drawing ongoing never-ending titles for Marvel and DC.

Byrne has always been up to all kinds of stuff. Some Indie, a bunch
of Elseworlds DC minis (Generations etc), will take over JLA with Chris
Claremont for a short stint sometime next year but mostly just been
pissing off fans and publishers for being a bit overly opinionated.

Hasn't been doin' much work. Did Orion a while back. I know I'm forgettin'
something. It's on the tip of my tounge. Something he's been doin' that
I'm forgetting.

...Alan Moore,...

He's been BUSY. Basically, under the brand of ABC (America's Best Comics)
for Wildstorm/DC Comics he's writing an entire Pulp-ish superhero Universe
from scratch. His best work for years. Since the ABC line doesn't have an
offical site (only the DC site) I'll direct you here for your complete ABC needs.

...and Frank Miller been doing much lately?

Mostly just some more Sin City stuff and DK2, the sequal to DKR.
