The best game in the world means nothing without players...

Johnnie Freedom's thread on AD&D 2e made me think of this little lesson I learned many years ago. I fell in love with GURPS (or at least in lust) and bought a bunch of supplements, etc. The problem was I couldn't find anyone who wanted to play. Back in those days, everyone wanted to play either AD&D 1/2 or Vampire:TM.

How much of a problem is it for you to find people to play your favorite system? I currently play 3.5 simply because that's what everyone else plays. I'd be interested in hearing people's experiences in finding players for:

--AD&D 1 or 2
--RC D&D or Basic/Expert D&D
--D&D 3.0 (there's apparently a lot of people turning up their nose to 3.0...if you haven't "upgraded" they don't want to play :( )
--any other "pet" system you have.

Not hard for me - the same players/good friends who play in my long-running 3.x main campaign also play in my Fuzion futuristic game (though we play that one much less than the main 3.x game, which is fine with all of us). They all recognize that d20 can't do certain genres very well, and they like the futuristic anime genre/subgenre along with standard medieval fantasy.

I've always wanted to play Top Secret/SI but it seems to put people off for some reason. Tried it once with my regular group of players but we never got past the character creation (simply because it bored the hell out of everyone else).

Most games I want to try as one-shots, my players are game for. With the exception of two players, they aren't so locked in that they won't play a single session of a different game.

If it's a d20 game, I can get them to play almost ANYTHING - they still feel comfprtable with the game, and don't have to spend half a day learning a bunch of rules they are only going to use one time.

If it's a non-d20 game, it's a little harder, unless the game is very easy to teach. My group two years ago took to Aetherco's Continuum in no time flat - and the whole group really responded well to Feng Shui earlier this year. But if I were to bust out something like Harn or Rolemaster, I doubt I'd get many takers. One of these days, I'm going to run a Shadowrun game for them, and see if it appeals. However, it will be a LONG time away, because between my Eberron game, Torm's Low-Magic Homebrew, and Oncarou's Star Wars game, we have our "dance cards" full, so to speak.

I have had problems setting up Ars Magica campaigns since my last move. **shrug** Maybe when the new edition comes out I can convince people again. I dearly love that game :)

I can't believe that you didn't find anyone playing GURPS with you. Easy rules, fast game, but you can play it indefinetly. I do love my general universal rock paper scissors

:D (sorry, couldn't resist).

Well, I do want to play 3.5. I haven't played the original D&D, and actually hate AD&D (OK, hate may be a hard word for it, but I still wouldn't play it if there were no other options).

I would play 3.0 if the rest insisted on it, but I would ask for some changes to be made, if they haven't done them, anyway. Especially the improvement of the Ranger class, and the changes to the Harm spell.

Other than that, I'd like to play in a Rokugan or Midnight game, as well as in WoD 2.0 and/or Vampire: the Requiem, but I don't have the time or inclination to DM/St these, and that would be the only way to get a game going.

Seriously, can't find a good HÔL game anywhere...

If it makes you feel any better, we're friends with Dan Thron, the guy who drew HoL. He claims it not actually meant to be played. :D

Finding players for obscure games is a big deal for us. We have a special house-con every year where we invite 30-40 friends over for a weekend and play games Friday to Sunday, 6 different four hour sessions, 3-4 games running simultaneously. The one rule? No D&D. Instead we run all the RPG games we want to try but never have a chance: Spaceship games, superhero games, horror games, gritty post-apocalyptic games, whatever you can think of; we usually have nine or ten different game systems running during the weekend. We've been doing this for five or six years now, and it's tremendous amounts of fun.

Not meant to be played! Maybe for the faint of heart. But if you can handle skills like: "Running as fast as you can into eternal damnation (cuz you can survive)" and "That psycho Bruce Lee &^%$" and "Surrender and still look like a man", then you can play HOL. :)

As my group of friends approaches 40 (yes, we've been playing since AD&D v1.0 !), it has become more and more difficult to simply Play !!

The Demands of family life seems to be growing. We used to play once a week, but this dropped to once per 2 weeks - and now, with one player getting his first kid in a couple of Month, and another getting his 3rd also in the same timetable, I can`t stop to wonder if we'll continue playing at all !!

We always used to say that we would be playing D&D (or whatever RP game) in our nursing home - with a Nurse placing the Dice in our hand so we could 'roll' it ... But now, even that old age idea seems on the verge of extinction...

I've fallen in love with role playing games a longgg time ago, and I seriously dread the day that I won't be able to play - for me, the system is not as important as the ability to Play !! I try to enjoy each game as if it was the last one - who know, it might be ... :(
