The Best New Base Class You Probably Aren’t Using Is . . .

For my money, the best new base class that you probably aren't using right now isn't even in any of the recent Wizards of the Coast splatbooks -- it's in Green Ronin's Advanced Player's Manual.

And that class is the eldritch weaver.
For your money? Sure, I'll take that burden off you. :D

I've been using the class, more or less, as a stand in for Sorcerers. I think they suit just perfectly. A few name changes, a couple of stat reassignments, some weird and wacky house ruling, and there you go: Sorcerer, only much much better.

The APM is a highly underrated book, IMO. The Psychic rules are solid too, and there are quite a few little tidbits worth utilising.

Thread of Mirrors, by the way? Nice. :)

I might go over Eldritch Weaver in some other format but I think the under-rated part is largely due to the fact if you compare APG with PG II, you can sort of see why PG II pulls away. Feats and Spells. Not to say APG doesn't have that, just not in the same way PG II does.

In any case I do like Eldritch Weaver.

Hmmm...

Sort of, except a little different. In most superhero stories, the characters have more or less the same powers or themes throughout their career. Spiderman is strong, can climb walls, and has a danger sense. He doesn't suddenly gain the ability to shoot deadly daggers from his big toes as far as I know.

Are you suggesting something like starting an Eberron game at like 6-8th level, and then never levelling up, or levelling up extremely slowly and being limited to non-spellcasting classes (when levelling up)? That could be... interesting, if you have a group that really loves to roleplay...

That would be fun with an amazingly RP-intesive group!

I was thinking more along the lines of enforced themes with level-ups. Spiderman would start with the ability to climb walls, but could get better at it as the game progressed: faster, gaining the ability to tumble on vertical surfaces, neat new wall-climbing stunts.

I do like your idea of level-ups limited to non-spellcasting classes though. That has some interesting potential.

Just wanted to bump this with this note for those who might be interested in the Eldritch Weaver and might be going to GenCon:

Chris Pramas announced this "package deal" that will be offered at their Gen Con booth earlier today:

That bundle is an amazing deal. How good? I have a hard copy of the Bestiary and PDFs of the APG and AGMG, and I am seriously tempted to still buy a bundle.

Incidentally, Green Ronin seems to be offering this deal on their web store for the rest of the weekend.

Anyone have a player (or is playing) a favored soul from Complete Divine? I had a player consider it, but instead just went with a standard cleric. His reasoning was that the only time he has a real need to be "spontaneous" about spells was in casting healing and he already had the ability to switch out there.

(A little late joining in..)

Hmmm.. that Eldritch Weaver class sounds interesting... I might just have to look into it some more.. a player in my group loves Wizards, but I think the ability to have a "themed" Wizard may appeal to her.
