I'm a Red Sox fan. I'm a little concerned about our pitching staff. They should be good, but I won't feel too sure about it until they get a few more games done and show their stuff.

We broke our curse. It feels kind of strange, but in a good way. I am hoping Cubs fans get their chance to find out what its like soon.

I have Dimitri Young on my fantasy team - that opening game certainly was nice.

As long as the Cubs and Reds are in the same division I cannot root for them. As a matter of fact the Reds were responsible for shutting the Cubs down at the end of last season (taking 3 out of 4 games in the last week of September) and keeping them out of the playoffs.

And after an impressive opening day, the Mariners are right back to where they were last year, sporadic offense and spotty pitching. <sigh>

thought I would revive this at the All-Star break, but the abyssmal play of the Reds has prompted me to post.

The Reds fired their manager Dave Miley today as well as long-time pitching coach and former ace of the Big Red Machine, Don Gullett. This is certainly not the way I envisioned this season.

How's your team doing?

The Indians just ended a long winning streak that got them into respectability after an awful start, and I still don't think the White Sox success can last; playing way over their talent level for half a season is almost possible, but over 162 games... Not sure the Tribe can catch the Twins, though.

Every time the Padres get a chance to run away with the division, they (and the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, fortunately) go on a losing streak. But they are in first place, so I can't complain too much. And it's looking like Bonds either won't return this year or will return too late to save the Giants, so the Padres should hold on to that spot.

Surprisingly, the Phillies are in second place in the NL East, 3 games back of the Nationals. This was mainly due to a recent 12-1 homestand. They're in a bit of a slump going 2-4 on a West Coast interleague trip and losing last night at home to the Mets.

The Giants are struggling to reach .500 - not our best season of late...

As much as people focus on B.B. being out of the lineup, the problem hasn't been hitting - it's been starting pitching. I think SF is something like last or second to last in Runs Allowed in the NL this year. :\

At this point I'm just glad to watch the Dodgers freefall...

In other news, the Angels are playing some good ball - what a difference VG makes in that lineup. I think the move to first has been good for Erstad - keeps him healthier than making those suicide catches in center every day.

And my fearless prediction: the Twins will catch the Chisox while running away from Cleveland in the second half.

The Braves are limping along, with most of their starting pitchers on the DL, and yet are somehow staying within striking distance of another division championship. Really hard to believe. After losing 7 or 8 series in a row, they have won 5 of their last 6 games and a few players seem to be getting hot. If they get a few guys back and pull this off it will be a true miracle year.

I am enjoying seeing some of the rookies and 2d year players come into their own. One of the problems with the Braves is they always want to platoon new guys with someone more experienced, and I think this delays development. Playing every day is the only way to get into a groove in baseball.

One thing I've learned since moving to Atlanta is to never count the Braves out. It seems like they always struggle with injuries at this time of year but somehow manage to find a way to win games, though I don't ever remember it being this bad (did Ramirez go on the DL yesterday?). I agree about the platooning, it drives me nuts, but who am I to question Bobby Cox? How about Smoltz in his last couple of starts? And Andruw is actually picking up his game. Notice how some wins started coming after Kolb lost the closer's job? If Furcal could become a decent lead-off guy and they could pick up another hitter, I think they're in decent shape. Not sure their pitching would hold up in the playoffs but I think they're in a decent position to contend.
