The chamberlain, the king, and the dragon (drobe)

Once Campbell checks in, I'll move things forward. If you guys want to split up, that won't be a problem so don't make a decision based on what you think would ease mental overhead for me. I can handle two Action Scenes simultaneously and we don't have the issue of people sitting at a table waiting patiently for folks to resolve their stuff!

I don't have time for a more detailed post right now, but Lucann will be pursuing the court mage.

Understood. Quinn and Lucann are pursuing the Court Mage.

I'm going to let you know in advance that depending on your intent and you M.O. here, this may involve a wee transition scene, then an initial Complexity 1 or 2 Skill Challenge and then, ultimately engaging the actual combat resolution mechanics, theater of the mind style. Make sure you account for your Healing Surges lost/spent and your deployed Dailies as they will likely matter (tactically) in the combat to come. I've got plenty of experience doing that in 4e so I don't think we will have a problem, but if either of you need any clarification, or an assist, let me know. It won't be an easy combat, definitely level + 2 or 3. Given that, LostSoul do you want to use your new lackey as a companion character (Brute) (and accompanying bump up of the encounter budget), or are you comfortable with the Controller/Striker setup?

On to the fiction.

Lucann and Quinn stay behind as Thurgon and Theron quickly trail after the burly northlander, a sprint for the King's Chambers ensuing. The scene is as you left it; quieting and calming crowd, stunned members of the War Council finishing their filing into the room, guards still seeking control of their hounds, eviscerated husk of a flesh construct as Lord Chamberlain at your feet. The Court Mage was channeling only a few short moments ago, his senses inevitably barely removed from attunement to this construct he created to pose as the Lord Chamberlain.

1 - Where do you think he is?

2 - What means are you using/what are you deploying in attempt to find him.

After I have that info, we'll go from there and begin your Action Scene. Campbell I know you're a busy boy right now so I'll let LostSoul take the lead here.

Thurgon has the advantage of Theren having already marked out the slippery parts of the floor - so I'll avoid them!

+16 Athletics, +4 from Knack for Success, makes it auto vs a Medium DC (and given my dice rolls, I need that): d20 = 17 (oh well, would have made it anyway even without spending an advantage) which is ample - if feasible, I'm happy to spend a Healing Surge to help Theren with a +2.

If we're splitting up, I'll call back to the other two (d20 roll of 9 +10 Endurance = 19 to call out while running): "Lucann, Quinn - find the Mage while we save the King!".

@LostSoul , @Campbell - I'm OK with splitting up if you are - Thurgon is pretty committed to saving the king.

Thurgon and Theron navigate the endless stone corridors of the castle. A seemingly endless maze of changes in elevation, switchbacks, and secret passageways are left in your wake. Its clear that the large man leading you has been this way before as he doesn't hesitate for a moment. Your lungs burn by the time you reach the top elevation and the stone breezeway that leads to the Royal Chamber. "We're almost there he shouts back at you" as he runs headlong down the long, stone hallway. The ceiling is high and there are shuttered openings that surely allow a fresh, cool breeze and a magnificent view of the entirety of the kingdom when the King needs a quiet walk to settle his mind and focus his thoughts. The illumination of the breezeway is subtle and tactful, torches in sconce in recessed stonework. There are no fancy drapes, no bourgeois tapestries with exotic embroidery. Just the cold, hewn stone, the finished wood of the shutters, the flickering flames, and the soft sigh of the wind just outside those shutters. At the end of the hall is a set of closed double doors, inevitably leading to what you seek.

At the mid-point of the breezeway, bisecting your route, there is suddenly light...the crashing rumble of a collision of terrible magnitude and a great shaking beneath your feet that threatens to steal your equilibrium. Where once there a great stone breezeway, where once there was a stout patriot, eager to see to his King and Queen, now there is nothing but open air. Where once there was silence, now the mournful howl of the wind and the sounds of deadly combat. At the precipice of the shattered breezeway you can see the perpetrator as the stonework and the broken body falls away; an enormous boulder, sent to flight by a giant catapult, strategically placed to achieve this distance and height. It was a one in a million shot and just missed the two of you; perhaps Kord has bigger plans for the two of you than "stuff on a rock".

pemerton and sheadunne, what are you guys doing? The leap is severe and at the Hard DC.

What are you guys doing? The leap is severe and at the Hard DC.

Theren will not hesitate. With a quick slap on Thurgon's shoulders and a long howl, he will attempt the leap to the other side.

Athletics: 15+6 = 21. Reroll (Savage Effort): 15+19-34.

Half way through Theren's jump, he realizes that while he had height, he wasn't getting the distance he needed. He curled himself up, rolled, and then pulled forward using his great spear to balance and landed roughly on the other side. Certainly not gracefully, but landing is all that mattered!

Whew.

Given that, LostSoul do you want to use your new lackey as a companion character (Brute) (and accompanying bump up of the encounter budget), or are you comfortable with the Controller/Striker setup?

Since he's the with the Court Mage I'll go for the companion character set-up.

1. I think he's in the Royal Gardens, a large space open to the sky nearby, with lots of trees & flowers & some vegetables. And probably a gazebo.

2. Lucann's probably better at this, but I'll try to "follow the trail of magic" back from the construct - hopefully that will give us a direction to go in, at least. I don't believe I have any specific divination magic, so that will be an Arcana check, if it's possible at all. Arcana (1d20+19=37)

The leap is severe and at the Hard DC.
I'll leap over, using Mighty Sprint (+5 Athletics) and an advantage to bring the difficulty down to Medium - I have the advantage of knowing that Kord has higher plans for me. That's a total bonus of +21. The d20 roll is 4 (of course), for a total of 25.

Once I'm over I'll extend my hand to Theren, to give him an advantage too - I'm assuming, sheadunne, that Theren will accept the help.

EDIT: Ninja-ed. OK, Theren got across without needing any help. Thurgon catches him up with his Mighty Sprint.

Just to clarify here, you want your lackey to move from background color to actual combat participant as a 3rd PC (Brute) should this go the route of blows, yes?

Hunter's Blessing is still active for Lucann. He can easily enough aid your efforts with a Nature check of his own (and with a + 2 bonus with a material link to the quarry). Your check plus his aid exceeds the Hard DC dramatically. I'm going to cut right to the scene. I need you guys to let me know what your intent is here ("Take Down" or "Other"). If "Other" then we will run it as a Skill Challenge.

With a piece of the construct the Court Mage so meticulously created, Lucann's eyes glow with a supernatural sight. With the spiritual emanations and the powerful magical ley line, fading but still present, connecting the construct to its creator, the two of you swiftly end up in the considerable acreage that make up the grounds of the Royal Gardens. You move to a particular grove, its beauty so enchanted that it reminds you of the Feywild Lucann. There amidst such unrivaled beauty, basking in the moonlight, in a kneeling position, seemingly lost in prayer is a beautiful Eladrin woman. Though you are many years removed from it, her silken voice, tinged with earthy undertones, is familiar to you Lucann. It is one of the Dryads that you spent your youth with, long since missing from your life.

"I come to this grove every highmoon. I pray every night to the Lady of the Moons but she hears me not. I followed my goals. I sought my destiny, new horizons and experiences; I left my very grove for them. I kept to the shadows and avoided the blazing light of good. The only tenant I ever broke was due to my affinity for the darkness. And Sehanine betrayed me. She betrayed all of us even before that when she let the filthy human swine burn our forests and destroy our very homes...for another night of kindling for fire or to build new homes in the stead of our natural ones. So I've found a new master that actually answers my prayers and gives me strength in return for fealty. Through her power I've become the greatest of assassins this world or the Feywild has ever seen. I’ve brought this entire city to its knees and killed its weakling human king; a king that sanctioned those massacres by his inaction. By my hand, the darkness consumed all of the human lands here, infiltrated the purity of the order of The Iron Tower, my thirst slaked by the blood of its former Knight Commander. The humans sack their own cities, spread pestilence in their own hands, destroy whatever they touch and move onto the next host. They are a parasite best stamped out and now...now I have the means to truly do that. I will show them the meaninglessness of their own pitiful existences and they will despair before their light fades to black."

"You disappoint me Lucann. But though I am filled with rage, I am not without sound mind. I offer you both an opportunity to be lieutenants in my army, sowing despair and death amongst the humans until the crawl back into the holes they came from like the orcs before them."

The dryad's image shimmers to her true, feminine plant hybrid visage, eyes as black as night, sharp teeth blued by Feywild flowers. You both feel the presence of terrible eyes upon you...hiding in the inky darkness of the Royal Garden's mighty grove...everywhere.

1) Please answer the question outlined at the top LostSoul.

2) What do you do and please specify your intent clearly.

The double doors are slightly ajar when you approach them. Entering the room is the simple matter of swiveling one of the doors on its hinges. Slipping into the room you witness a spartan scene before you. This is no king of a lavish life. The furnishings are simple rather than grandiose. The pelts covering the stone floor and lying on the bed were probably wrought by the hand of the man prostrate in the large bed before you. His sick wheezing is the foreground noise to the background vocals of the chill wind rusling the ample curtains over the large picture windows cut into the stone. There is no queen in sight. Not here. Nor in the secondary chamber. Only the King. Looking at him, he is an aged man but there is a fierceness to his presence, even in his ghastly state. He appears to be dreaming...of something terrible. He shudders every few moments, soft moan escaping his lips, fighting a demon or horde that you cannot see. Though he bears no visible wound nor sign of pestilence, his life is clearly ebbing from him as you look upon him.

Either one of you may act. Specify intent and action please.

The dryad's image shimmers to her true, feminine plant hybrid visage, eyes as black as night, sharp teeth blued by Feywild flowers. You both feel the presence of terrible eyes upon you...hiding in the inky darkness of the Royal Garden's mighty grove...everywhere.

A single tear streams down Lucann's right cheek. He turns to face the dryad with a grim countenance: "You disappoint me. There was a time when my blood flowed for your heart, Maiden of The Autumn. It was your tenderness that guided me toward stewardship of the forest. It was your beauty that helped me realize there was more to look forward to than hunting and revelry. The time we spent under the shade of your treehome tied me to Our Lady. Without you I would be no steward of The Accords.".

In an instant, Lucann's bearing shifts from somberness to quiet but fierce resolve. His eyes burn with Sehanine's warmth and he looks upon the dryad with disdain. He speaks: "You do not realize what you have taken from me on this day. Know this - there is no strength to be found in shadows. How can there be? Shadows take their strength from the light of the moon and the sun. They rob the world of its beauty. They delight in twisting what is beautiful and pure. Turning to the shadows has done nothing to restore our ancestral home or help to ensure what remains will be safe. Your actions here have disrupted the connection the True Forest has with this world. You have brought suffering to our cousins. Our lady did not betray you - you betrayed her when you turned away from beauty."

Lucann's hefts his spear. His words are measured, but firm: "Heart of my heart, I still bleed for you. That is why I cannot see you continue down this path. Look into my eyes - Our Lady lives within me and around me. See that the world still lives, and you might again. this is my oath to you - I will restore The Accords and see you returned to the treeheart. If you still have any love for me you will see that I speak truth."

Lucann turns to Quinn: "I know you believe in nothing, but I'm sure you can see that nothing can come of her staying as she is - a shadow of her true self."

Intent: To wear at her spirit and help her see her way back to Sehanine's service. I'm leveraging Glaring Admonition here. Lucann will fight to restore her.

Mechanics
Minor Action For Oath of Enmity - she's also marked until the end of my next turn.
Standard for Glaring Admonition
 • 1d20+15=27 vs. Will
 • Damage: 3d8+5=21* Half on Miss
 • -2 to defenses vs divine attacks (save ends on hit, end of next turn on miss)
 • Effect: Implement attacks can take advantage of Oath of Enmity mechanics.
Minor Action: Loyal Sanction - Quinn receives +5 to damage rolls versus the Dryad until the end of my next turn.

Forgot to add enhancement bonus. It's actually 24 damage.
