The Closed Eye (DM: Halford, Judge: garyh)

[sblock=Detect Frustation]We should get Tander a crossbow. :)

It would be a nice complement, especially since he’s got a good Dex for a cleric and is “built” for ranged combat.[/sblock]

Palindrome climbs over the wall and sends a blast of magic flying uselessly into the hillside.

"It wasn't useless!" screams Palindrome at the voice in his head, "That ****** hill had it coming!"

Palindrome moves towards the elf.

[OOC: Move 6 spaces to AC-5.]

He hops and spins, flinging a magic missile at the archer. "Keee-yah!"

[OOC: Magic Missile! (1d20+4=16, 2d4+4=8)

If this takes the dink out, he's unconscious--and Palindrome will sprint over as fast as possible and perform a flying elbow drop on him.]

Round 7

Atreus hurries after the elf, but hurls only threats, not sling stones.

Woe charges again and scores another wound against the archer. It is only a small cut, but the archer is visibly weakening.

Palindrome moves forward and blasts the archer with magic. This last blow is too much for it, and it slumps to the ground, unconscious. Palindrome limps up the hill and drops elbow-first onto the fallen foe, though it looks rather more like collapsing in exhaustion than celebrating in triumph.

End combat

"Well, so much for the stealthy approach," Neera quips. "What now?"

[sblock=status]

Tander 2/24 bloodied
Atreus 17/24
Woe 16/29
Palindrome 5/23, one failed death save
Neera unharmed

Resources used (assumes you take a short rest):

* Atreus: Surge x2, healing potion, AP

"We must rest," Tander says, too tired too notice Neera's comment. "Let us take cover by the trees, lest any other enemies swarm down upon us."

Tander quickly heads over to the trees where Atreus hid so successfully, encouraging the others to follow. "Come quickly!"

OOC: I used second wind, so I'm down one surge from the encounter. I will also spend 4 surges to heal to full. Since I assume we are just resting 5 minutes, I will not expend any healing words after the rest (no bonus healing, sorry mates).

Palindrome limps up the hill and drops elbow-first onto the fallen foe, though it looks rather more like collapsing in exhaustion than celebrating in triumph.

Palindrome paws at his head. "Nyaaah! When did my internal narrator turn into an internal critic!"

"Well, so much for the stealthy approach," Neera quips. "What now?"

"Ha! Indeed!" laughs Palindrome, "This is why we should have just started burning things."

He turns serious. "You have served me well, Meatshield, and I shall ask of you one last service, then I shall release you (mostly) from my curse."

He takes a deep breath.

"Go to the marketplace and fetch for me a trained attack monkey or chimpanzee."

"If you fetch two, I shall be twice as grateful."

"Oh, and fetch a crossbow for Tander."

"And 'fetch' means 'steal'--or some other method that does not involve I or my companions expending money."

He turns away and busies himself tying up the elf...

And searching the elf's pockets...

And blinding the elf...

And cutting off the elf's thumbs...

And gagging the elf...

With the elf's thumbs and a very dirty rag used many times for wiping Palindrome's nose.

He pats the elf on the cheek. "Looks like I've got the raw materials for a fine pair of elven boots."

The wizard trundles off to join Tander.

OOC: Yep. Spending those Healing Surges to restore all that lost health.

[sblock=Not to sound like a broken record, but...]Are we 2nd level yet?

We've been playing this story for about 6 months. That should give us about 500 XP.

The two bugbears got us about 133 XP.

We received a 125 XP bonus for roleplaying.

Two elf archers and three goblins is worth about 525 XP total -- divvied up to say 130 XP each.

Then, there are all the skill challenges: talking to the dowager at the start, acquiring a copy of the Screamer, following leads at the Gaston residence, visiting the library, and performing streetwise info-gathering. I don't know how much all of that is worth, but it should be a couple of hundred.

What do you say?[/sblock]

[sblock=And a blast from the past...]We never figured out to unveil the hidden text at the bottom of the Screamer. Halford said that we knew everything we needed to know to counter the magic and Palindrome could perform three Intelligence checks for clues, but it would reduce the overall XP that we would gain from figuring it out.

Since we're stuck and resting, Palindrome will ponder the paper (again).

With the elf relieved of nipples and made useless to a woman, Woe points dramatically with a triumphant stare. “Now tremble before the might of my magic finger!”

A magic missile swishes over his shoulder, once again impacting where he’s pointing and knocking the archer out cold. “Woohoo! It’s growing in potency, now with flashy visual and sound effects!”

As Palindrome comes rushing for an elbow drop, Woe kneels to offer a boost and give him added height and momentum for the jump.

Sighing victoriously, he leaves the mage to play with the helpless victim and proceeds to quickly snatch any gear and valuables from the remaining felled opposition. He casts a brief look back towards the mansion to gauge if there’s any further activity, and then rejoins his comrades in hiding with the plundered goods.

“Nice show, boys. Everyone still alive? Or at least not too dead to move on?”

Woe pats the priest on his back and offers him a bow and quiver.

“Thanks again for getting my back, Tander. How about holding on to one of these for now, just in case we need to chase down anymore cowardly stragglers?”

[sblock=Recovery]Woe spends 2 surges to fully recover.

Until we pawn all the goods, perhaps Tander should hold onto one of the bows? Even at +2 to hit, that huge range could still be handy until we get out of the heat.

Neera rolls her eyes at Palindrome's instructions, and when he begins the process of mutilating the fallen elf, she pales. "Crossbow, right. Attack monkey. Yes. Whatever. I'm going now." If no one stops her, she clambers over the wall and out of sight.

[sblock=ooc]You guys are definitely due some XP. Bear with me while I read over the early bits again and figure out how much; it will take some thought to figure out which of those skill checks were part of skill challenges and how complex (and difficult) they were. I think I can say, though, that it would not be premature to start getting your level 2 updates ready.[/sblock]

[sblock=About XP...]YEEEEE-HAW!

Anybody know the decision for re-training to the new stuff? I want to add those illusionist powers to my boy.[/sblock]

Palindrome watches Neera climb over the wall. He sniffs...

And it appears there's actually a tear in his eye.

"Best. Familiar. Ever."

He waves. His mage hand waves.

"I hope she finds a BIG monkey."

He then draws out his silver amulet, rattles it, and holds it to his ear. "Does this thing even work anymore?" he asks the hyper-critical voice in his head.

slightly handwaved xp award

[sblock=XP]After a bit of reading, I decided that life was too short to be picky about unravelling the xp from all the skill use and roleplaying bits. I'm just going to call it a minor quest, put a number on it, and move on. If, that is, our judge approves.

Palindrome, Tander, and Woe each get:
  • 415 xp for 5 months of play at level 1 (26 Sept 2008 - 26 Feb 2009)
  • 138 xp for a quarter share of the elf archers encounter (total 550)
  • 200 xp for completing a "minor quest".

Together with the 133 each for the bugbears and the 150 each for roleplaying from Halford (here), that totals 1036 each, so you guys can advance to level 2. Congratulations.

Atreus only gets the 138 for the archers encounter. I'll hold onto his time XP for now.

Thanks for your continued patience, everybody. Having 2 DMs disappear has not been good for the pace of the game, and it's a testament to your skill and forbearance that we still have momentum and flavor in this game. Also, I sincerely hope you will forever hold the record for most DMs in a single adventure.
