The Closed Eye (DM: Halford, Judge: garyh)

"On the plus side, it looks like we've found a crossbow for Tander!" says Palindrome. He moves past Woe and attempts to disarm the second spear trap.

The red light over Palindrome's head winks out--because he's not that interested in making a target of himself. Instead, the light reappears behind the turrets, backlighting them for the party.

[sblock=4E Question]Do psychic powers or illusions affect inanimate objects in this iteration of the D&D rules?[/sblock]

ooc: I have a memory of reading something in the past suggesting that inanimate objects have no will defense and can't be targeted with attacks that target will defense, but I can't find it now. Does anyone know whether I'm imagining things, or just being bad at finding rules today?

ooc: Ah, there it is: DMG p.66. For objects, you can't target their will defense, and they're immune to psychic, poison, and necrotic.

"On the plus side, it looks like we've found a crossbow for Tander!" says Palindrome. He moves past Woe and attempts to disarm the second spear trap.
“He only needs one of them intact, though!”

Woe steps past Palindrome and springs into action, calling out to the newcomer in their group.

“Duck, Atreus!”

Counting on Atreus’ swift reflexes to comply just as quickly as he dodged the spear trap, Woe rushes ahead to take a step on his arched back and vault up in the air. He trails his aim after the red light behind the turrets and strikes out where it connects to the ceiling.

[sblock=Actions]Woe makes a leaping charge against the frailest looking crossbow, flavored as vaulting off Atreus’ back. Athletics 20 should clear F1 to prevent setting off any trap-trigger that square may contain. Woe hits AC 28, deals 8 damage, and lands in G1 under the crossbows.

If possible, Woe will take an opportunity attack when the trap makes its next ranged attack, though I’m not sure if that makes sense in this context.

Nice disarming rolls, by the way![/sblock]

Tander winces sympathetically as Atreus is hit, and he sends invisible threads of healing energy his way. He steps a bit closer and sends bolts of divine energy at the crossbow, hoping to finish off what Woe started.

OOC:
Move to take Woe's place at C1.
Healing word on Atreus - spends surge, heals surge and an extra 9 hp. That takes him to full exactly - how efficient!
Sacred flame on same crossbow as Woe - hits ref 11 for 10 damage. If hit, Atreus gets 4 tmp hp.

The smile is surely gone and Atreus curses at the crossbows in a foreign language.

Atreus swiftly gets out of the way and watches Woe plunge down to attack one of the crossbows.

Feeling Tanders healing energy makes Atreus confident that he will be able to pull this stunt " Coming Through "
he says and moves quickly down past Woe by sliding down the walls. When he is down at the bottom, he pulls his kit forth and tries to disarm the other trap hoping that he can secure a crossbow for Tander.

[sblock=Location of Crossbow Traps]
The crossbow turrents are just below the ceiling, not quite 15 feet above ground. Woe can reach them with his spear, but other melee attacks will fall short unless you find some way to get closer to them.

You might want to revise your action, A. From the description, I don't think we can reach them for a disarm...though it might be worth a try with a Mage Hand.[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]Hmm, he did roll a nice Acrobatics check (24), though. Perhaps that'll allow him to get up there and hold on while he disarms - possibly temporarily hanging on with a free hand or going upside down with his feet around one of the crossbow connections.

By the way, Atriden, are you cool with the jump-off-Atreus'-back stunt? Got the impression from your post that you might have misunderstood that this was Woe's intention (even if its just flavor).[/sblock]

OOC:I am really sorry about that guys. I am not sure what the hell I was thinking when I wrote that post. I dont have the time to change it now and wont be able to post before wednesday.
To DM: If Atreus can attempt to disarm the crossbow in some kind of funky way, he will do so. Otherwise he takes his trusty sling and shoots after the same crossbow as the others.

Round 1, continued

Palindrome disarms the spears beneath Atreus before they can impale the rogue again, and moves his light to the crossbows.

Woe leaps off Atreus' back and pokes at one of the crossbows, gracefully clearing a few steps, and breaking off a bit of the crossbow's armoring. He lands below them, but his landing is less graceful, due possibly to the fact that more spears promptly emerge from the ground and open a bloody scratch on his thigh. (ooc: hits crossbow 1 (they look to be in about the same condition), and lands in G1, triggering another square of spears, which hits for 5.

Tander moves forward and grants Atreus some much-needed healing, then sends a bolt of sacred energy splashing against the wall. (miss)

Atreus moves forward to disarm the new spears that Woe has discovered, but he discovers some more himself on the way, and chooses to disarm those instead. (ooc: move to F1, get hit with more spears for 4. Disarms the spears in F1. If one of you guys can provide actions for Atreus until he returns, I'd appreciate that.)

Woe and Atreus can see that the stairs continue down to the side from the landing.

Round 2

The crossbows both turn towards Woe, launching bolts at point blank range that punch through his armor like paper. (ooc: both crossbows randomly pick Woe to attack, both hitting for 26 total damage. Woe is bloodied. Good thing he beefed up at level 2...)

[sblock=Dungeoneering or Thievery DC 15]Most traps like this will have a hidden control panel somewhere, so that the builders can bypass the trapped area safely.[/sblock]

[sblock=Traps and OAs and such, oh my]Yeah, this is a can of worms. Do traps provoke OAs? Can they be marked? Do they ever grant CA? The rules seem to be silent on these issues as best I can tell, so I'm gonna make something up. I'm picturing these crossbow turrets as being more heavily armored to the front, i.e. where they're pointing. Thus, I'll say that they do grant OAs and can be marked, and could grant CA by flanking, not that you guys can flank. Now, they're 15 feet up, so they're out of range for OAs, but Woe can still get combat challenge attacks on them with his reach weapon.

As usual when I'm making stuff up, this should not be taken as precedent.[/sblock]
