The Dragon Compendium Volume 1 preview in the new Dragon?

I'd love to see an update of that big Witch article (the issue number eludes me, as I don't have my Dragon CD-ROM handy, but the cover was criticized for having an essentially nude woman kneeling on an altar in the moonlight).

Agreed. The witch was one of my favorite "NPC" classes. Nice flavor and not unbalanced, IIRC. Unfortunately, I no longer have my copy. *sob*

As for the cover, it probably was just about the most risque cover ever on Dragon, but it was also in the top ten in terms of flavor. I've never been big on girlie posters and the like, but I'd love to have a poster-sized blow-up of that cover. It just has a cool ambiance.

Considering that you can still get the Dragon CD-Roms at many gaming stores, why bother re-issuing the material in a non-3.5 format?

Well, if it was that available, I doubt the collection would be going for well over $100 when it appears on eBay. I'd say a few gaming stores.

That being said, I wouldn't buy the "best of" if it wasn't adapted to 3.5 (or at least done in a compatible format).

I've seen it around a few Waldens.

It's still lingering at the vestiges of the supply chain.

When did Mike Mearls become a WotC employee?

And does that mean he doesn't work for Malhavoc anymore?

And why do I dearly hope the weird, old article about the mad botanist and his strange plants (like the bleating sheep flower, and the dandy-lion) shows up?

About a month ago. And, yes. The parting was quite amicable according to his blog.

Actually, from what I've seen, the rush on EBay was one of convenience and hype, not actual rarity. This is purely based on personal conjecture, I might add. The prices for the archive on eBay have gone down since the first few going for $120+, and now is resting comfortably in the 80-90 range, which is what most gaming stores seem to be selling it for.

In the 6 gaming stores I can drive to within an hour of my home, 4 have copies, 3 have multiple copies, and all have it listing roughly around $79.00

The two copies on eBay right now (both ending within the next hour) are selling for $86 and $66 respectively.

It's not that much of a preview (though it does mention some converted monsters). In his editorial, Erik gives it a fairly large paragraph of text, though he doesn't give much away. Here's the excerpt:

THE DRAGON COMPENDIUM (VOLUME I)
DUNGEON isn't the only magazine to get the hardcover treatment. In October, Paizo will release The DRAGON Compendium (Volume 1), a 256-page collection of some of the greatest articles ever published in this magazine, updated to the latest edition of the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS rules (MSRP $39.95). A true collection of the best DRAGON articles would fill several volumes, which is precisely why we're calling this one "Volume 1." Developed by fan-favorite designer (and new Wizards of the Coast employee) Mike Mearls, the books features a return of the orange, purple, and yellow dragons, classes like the death master, sha'ir, and savant, and as much great content from the past as we can fit between the covers.

The main Q would be: How far back would the articles go?

Personal Q: what the heck are "orange, purple and yellow dragons"? Never heard of those before. But then if they're from an earlier edition, then I'm certainly not familiar with them as I didn't start until right when 3e came out.

Sounds kewl tho, even tho the price is a tad steep, IMO.

The Yellow Dragon was in 2nd Edition. It was basically "the other chromatic dragon". I've never seen the purple orange outside of crossbreeds.

I'd also have to give a nod to seeing the Rakasta and Lupin sub-races articles. Those were a bit overkill, but great nonetheless.

I'll for sure be picking this up.

Overkill? No.. but they were definitely fun, and could be culled for tons of regional flavor in a campaign where Rakastas and Lupins are PC races. With the power of Level Adjustments, this is the perfect chance to redo these articles!
