I wonder if a DM could just make the campaign his own, not use the pre-gens, and just use the locations have have the PCs explore as they see fit. Because I think the location descriptions are wonderfully detailed.

I guess my post above was too long to wade through, then :(

Short answer: yes, it's perfectly possible, but a bit more work for the DM.

I think though, that you need to have some idea of how the War of the Lance would progress before any PC actions are taken into account, because the setting and the saga needs the feeling of sweeping events taking place.

Edit:

You can mine the "dungeon" parts of each adventure though, as many of them are pretty cool 3d designs. Change the reason for going there to something specific to your campaign.

DL1 - Sunken City of Xak Tsaroth - I love this setting, highly atmospheric.
DL2 - Pax Tharkas, good for a forbidding fortress on a mountain pass.
DL3 - Skullcap, wizard's stronghold destroyed by magic, not as well populated as it could be, IMO.
DL4 - Floating Tomb of Derkin - loads of tricks and traps.
DL6 - Icewall Castle, okay, but drab after the previous four.
DL7 - Stone Dragon - again, visually very cool.
DL8 - High Clerist's Tower. A super dungeon, too space, not enough in it as it stands.
DL9 - Hmm, not so dungeony, this one, but you get three temples.
DL10 - again, no dungeon to speak of in this one.
DL12 - There's no major dungeon. Some underwater mini-dungeons and loads of sites of interest.
DL13 - lava caverns plus three wierd test locations, probably most notable is the moebius tower.
DL14 - Temple of Neraka is the most prominent dungeon location, suitable for all your evil overlord needs.

I also supplemented with the Atlas of Krynn which had some other locations such as Solace, Floating Castles, Kalaman etc. mapped out.

It's easy to make it your own. Go for it. Really, the greatest concerns are player pre-conceived notions and your own pre-conceived notions.

Approach it from a fresh perspective and you'll have fun.

My advice: try to get away from DL1 and DL2 as fast as you can. These modules were detailed blow by blow in Dragons of Autumn Twilight - which your players have probably read once upon a time.

"Once upon a time" being like TWENTY YEARS AGO, you mean? Should be safe by now....

I played from DL6 to the start of DL9 OR 10, it was fun, Tass was played perfectly by a girl, the Raistlin player was really in his role, I played Elistan (boring for a 20 years old boy) after some players quitted I got Laurana to play in addition.
The campaign broke because players went away for real life problems.

I've run my group through some quick adventures from the 3.5 updated Dragons of Autumn. They all had fun. One of them even got a pet baby black dragon out of it. :)

not the case for me. i bought them(the modules) as they came out. and i was the only one to have read the novel out at the time.

the only preconceived notions i got was from trying to DM it.

players: we go east.
me: you are attacked by random number of draconians
players: whoa. that was a tough fight. we are free now. we continue east.
me: you are attacked by random number
players: whoa. two pcs down but we should be free now. we continue
me: you are attacked by random number
players: screw this. lets play something else.

Chugga, chugga, choo, choo.

don't get me wrong i played these. and used them. and my players loved it. but it was a lot. a whole lot of work. to keep the railroad in the background.

Well, he has a point.

Monte: "You are in the city of Ptolus!" *indicates huge book filled with awesome urban adventure.
Players: "OK, we leave and go north."
Monte: "..."

Cheers,
Cam
