I can remember when Dragon magazine had an obsession with the drow. I don't mind their recent obsession with the gith races, because the gith are cooler than the drow could ever hope to be.

I recall a thread a while ago, maybe a year or so ago in which we predicted what the new "cool" enemy would be since everybody started going away from drow.

I beleive the concensus was Githyanki.

Heh - I remember the Githyanki from before the Fiend Folio. Dragon #67 - An adventure to retrieve a sword named Fedifensor. It was the first time I had ever read stuff about the Astral plane, and the Githyanki. Hmm, I wonder if I can back that adventure for my current campaign? I am reasonably sure none of the players have ever seen it. Especially since that issue of Dragon is older than many of my players.

I have to say that this has my vote as one of the classic Dungeon adventures... even though it was in Dragon. I never DMed it, came close!, but I'm sure I will in the next year or so under the 3.5E ruleset.

I noticed that trend, too. I found it kind of strange, myself. I never thought they were all that fascinating (at least not to justify the amount of times I have seen them pop up lately).

Dragon 67 was release in Nov 82. The FF was released in 1981. The adventure says to read about Githyanki in the FF.

Githyanki appear in the latest Dungeon although that adventure is a psionics adventure so it isn't so bad that they appear in it.

Oi, egg on my face. Okay, that they are. But given that, they were left alone for well over a year before they appeared again. It doesn't seem obsessive to me.

How about that? Huh, I distinctly remember picking up that issue of Dragon long before I saw a copy of the Fiend Folio. Of course, I was 12 when Dragon #67 came out and I was not all that worldly. So it is very likely that I just didn't know the right places to shop yet.
