The end of all edition wars?

Yes, such gamers exist. Yes, they have boards. Yes, they have more than one edtion of their chosen game. Frex, I can ask for advice on pretty much any edition of Rolemaster at the ICE forums, HarnMaster at the Lythia forums, GURPS at the SJG forums, etc without a legion of people calling me a "retard" or a "moron" in 'l33t' speak. :D

The root here is that these games remained mostly the same over the editions. It can be argued that 1-3E and 4E are two completely different games, even different types of games. 3E is closer to Rolemaster, 4E is really something quite new and radical, whose closest predecessors are things like the little-known Feng Shui RPG.

But this discussion might be off-topic here - I'm not sure the community can discuss what prompted the edition wars yet without having them flare up again.

"Don't mention the war!"

I very recently sold every physical D&D rule book that I own because of the incessant sniping going on over which edition of said game is superior to all others. I have started ordering books for other games and game systems whose player bases aren't so deeply and bitterly divided over something as petty as edition preference.
Naturally what you do with your gaming books is none of my business, but isn't that excessive?

I mean, I agree with you that the D&D fan base can exhibit some ridiculous partisan behavior*, but why not just play the games that you like and ignore the rantings on the Internet?

*I remember being insulted, almost at the same time, both for being a nostalgic fool for playing AD&D and a munchkin for playing 3rd edition...

There is an Ignore function to permanently unview the posters you find annoying. I sure hope that both sides use it.

It's the best thing to avoid edition wars and reading repetitive thread crapping from the same persons over and over.

Indeed, it sounds like a pretty extreme reaction to what a bunch of people on the interwebs might say. But then, there's always context missing with these things - something to keep in mind, for some - so who knows.

And yeah, I also endorse the ignore function, as well as the 'ignore thread' function available in any given thread. I've only used the latter once, mind you, and that thread disappeared anyway, AFAIK. As far as ignored people goes, from memory there are only about four or five on my list, all there as of last year. Prior to that, I felt no need to bother.

You mean, games which have only a single edition? :p
