The end of all edition wars?

One of the things that I'm starting to see more of isn't 3e vs 4e edition wars, but intra-4e wars. Some people have decided that there is 'one true way' of playing 4e and are intolerant of other ways of playing 4e - this is similar to intra-3e problems of years gone by :(

yup. very much reminds me of the "that's not RAW but would make a good houserule" dismissals.

I very recently sold every physical D&D rule book that I own because of the incessant sniping going on over which edition of said game is superior to all others. I have started ordering books for other games and game systems whose player bases aren't so deeply and bitterly divided over something as petty as edition preference.

Wow, I don't think I could ever bring myself to sell any of my DnD books regardless of edition. When you pry them from my cold dead hands and all that.

I agree. I just didn't want to add too many points to my initial post. Keep it simple and all that.
I think it's important to draw the line more precisely than you did in your original post. It's easy to say that you won't respond to personal insults. It's harder to say that you won't respond directly to somebody spreading what you perceive to be misinformation about your favorite edition. These latter discussions often devolve into the former.

My corollary to Phaezen's fourth point is this: before responding, I ask myself whether I am contributing to the discussion that the thread's OP solicited, or am I trying to "correct" somebody else's contribution? In an ideal world, if Person A starts a thread and Person B posts something with which you disagree, you could respond to person B and have an engaging but pleasant discussion. These days, particularly if 3E versus 4E is relevant, I'd rather directly offer Person A a (implicitly) contrasting viewpoint or not participate at all.
