The end of all edition wars?

This.

Wait, people ... on the internet... saying they won't use sarcasm and complain?

Now I've seen everything.

;)

I must admit that I am pretty tired of the arguing back and forth about 4e sucking or not. At this point, I doubt the two “sides” can change the mind of anyone that is still undecided, or change the mind of the “other side”.
I honestly don't think Edition Wars are about changing anyone's mind. It's about defending your side while attacking the other guy. Much like political fights, the details don't matter, it's merely an 'Us Vs. Them" where both sides are convinced they are right.

The root here is that these games remained mostly the same over the editions. It can be argued that 1-3E and 4E are two completely different games, even different types of games. 3E is closer to Rolemaster, 4E is really something quite new and radical, whose closest predecessors are things like the little-known Feng Shui RPG.

But this discussion might be off-topic here - I'm not sure the community can discuss what prompted the edition wars yet without having them flare up again.

"Don't mention the war!"

Yes, the Edition war is not XP versus Vista, but rather more reminiscent of the Mac-vs-PC wars.

...or the Open Source vs Windows wars... or Amiga vs Mac wars... or Commodore vs Sinclair wars.. or BSD vs SysV... Darn, those last ones makes me feel so old!

I agree. I just didn't want to add too many points to my initial post. Keep it simple and all that.

I have found that my ignore list has been very helpful - even though I only have less than 10 people on there.

Same here. I also ignore threads when appropriate, just to remove temptation.

Actually, I've noticed a severe drop in my posting habits. Many threads just aren't worth responding to anymore. Too often, when I'm digging a thread, it turns into sniping anyway. So, I just don't post. I still spend the same amount of time reading the forums, though. I have to do something at work, after all. ;)

Yes, there are games that people don't get into a snit over. For instance, I can't recall any angst over BRP Call of Cthulhu. But then that game's barely changed since the 70s. There are other games that are worse, believe it or not. The 3e/4e split isn't anything compared to the venom and vitriol summoned by Mage. I've seen mage discussion threads that I'm glad were on the internet, because in real life the participants would have been ready to stab each other.

For me, well I don't like 3e. Was into it for awhile, and the things I didn't like started bothering me more and more. Gonna try out 4e this weekend. But if I don't like it, oh well. There's plenty of games I do like.

:eek::lol:

Now, I am not saying I haven’t contributed to the flames, because I surely have, even though I have only ever been warned once and never banned. I still fully accept a part of the blame for some of the flamewars. And I want to stop being part of them.
I know exactly how you feel, Jack. I used to get all bent out of shape over the new edition, nitpicking and arguing with everyone about it, loudly proclaiming my disappointment, etc. But then I took a vacation, and spent a week away from the Internet. When I got back, I realized that I just didn't care all that much about a silly game.

The Internet seems to make these discussions much more dramatic and personal than they normally would be. I have a hard time believing that (most) people would act so childish and rude to each other's faces. I recommend that all of these Edition Warriors take a week-long vacation from the Internet. At the very least, it will help them to gain perspective. (It worked for me, at least.)

Yeah, I remember that quite well - You have been a changed man ever since.

Cheers
