[The End of the World of Darkness] What's White Wolf got up its sleeve?

I'm liking this, now. I may very well insert it into the campaign i'm planning.

The one thing I'm VERY concerned about though is...what happens after.

IMO, it can't really be much of a World of Darkness if it's not a modern day setting.
"Our world, but darker" as it were.

If it's still that after Gehenna, then, they really must not think much of Gehenna...

Anything less then Hell on Earth will be a cop out.

And I don't want to play Hell on Earth, so that's that.

I'm honestly upset by this. I've been playing d20 D&D ever since 3rd edition came out that fateful summer, and I *JUST* started to seriously get into the World of Darkness. Hell, I just dropped $65 to get the Vampire and Mage core books. I feel a little cheated, a little curious as to what they're going to do, but really just sad that the setting will end, that's that, and if I ever want to get another Mage book or something, I'll have to hunt online or check the back of the rack in the store, because those babies will never ship again.

Very unfortunate. I was excited about expanding my gaming horizons and everything.

By the way, is it a stereotype that WoD and D&D folk like to take stabs at each other, or what?

I've played D&D and WoD peacefully for several years.

Man...I think the whole news haven't just gotten to me. I'm going to wake up sweating in the middle of the night expecting fireballs to be raining on my yard....

:p

OK well maybe not, but this is still pretty overwhelming for me.

I'm going to get the Vampire and Mage stuff, because I wanna see who dies, who lives, and what happens to the world as we know it.

I'm trying to write some fiction based on those worlds, so I have to find out how my characters will deal with IMPENDING DOOM!

*KRACKLE-POW!*

I have not played much in the way of White Wolf games, but I have a weird idea from having played Mage: The Ascension.

If large numbers of people ascend, and the world is destroyed, would sufficiently large numbers of mages have the ability to recreate the world. If this is not the case for the official setting, you can always do it in your own setting.

(If magic is belief made manifest, than perhaps all things are possible.)

From a story telling standpoint, I can see why they need to bring the inevitable conflict to a boiling point. However, this may truly annoy WW fans. At worst, it could be Gehenna for WW if enough people are angry. This would be an irony of epic proportions.;)

I kinda don't get it.

Why are people dreading this so?

It seems exciting to ME - a fantastic, pretty unique opportunity to resolve the titanic storythreads they've developed for over a decade. When has this happened in the history of gaming?

But then again, I'm not addicted to canon, and view it as a a no-lose situation : If what they present is good stuff, it's incredibly exciting and satisfying from a reader-of-stories aspect, whereas if it sucks, than you just ignore it and keep playing happily in WoD as you have.

White Wolf is doing fairly well financially, and has carved a niche for itself. Additionally, they have released a few new products.

A story needs a good payoff. The key question for WW players is will it be worth it, and what can they do afterwards. (The Hell on Earth scenario does not seem like a popular one, based on what I have read on these boards.)
