The Enworld background as a 3-D effect?

Stereograms NEVER worked for me until today...

I tried Storyteller's method, but then instead, I ended up focusing in on the reflection of a brightly lit window on my screen - as soon as I focused in on the reflection instead of the screen proper, the image that curtis posted snapped into view.

Weird.

[EDIT: Now I am going to surf the web for stereograms to try out my new-found powers!]

That's actually a very good way to do it. A lot of times, if the stereogram is in a picture frame, and has glass in the frame, they are easier to see.

Ditto... odd, really. For me, it to choose two reference points on the same horizontal line, and try to get those together before attempting to view the whole picture. It may take a few seconds to get the 3d image.

The second one was tricky, though. [sblock]The round section was rather distracting, and the right part was almost evoking a scorpion, or a space station with a disc-shaped ship, before the Enterprise popped put.[/sblock]

I just cross my eyes and let the image settle into focus, it works better up close, but not much.

Whilst I can see the magic image in the second one I can't work out what it is. It looks like a hand, or something.

I have never seen one of these things work. I strongly suspect it's because my eyes don't quite point in the same direction.

It's stereo photography. It's really tricky, but you can get your eyes to form a 3-d image of whatever picture you see. Throw your eyes out of focus like you would with one of those magic-eye things, then an image should start to appear in between the two photos. Focus on that center image, and ignore the right and left one. You should see a really cool 3-d image... But it takes more practice than those computer generated designs do.
I guess the stereo photography used to be a really big thing, cause I have seen special glasses that do the focusing for you. I have seen old pairs at antique stores, but you can get modern ones, I think.
