The ENWorld Electric Bard Gear (Etc) Thread

I’ve seen a few reports over the past few days that G&L has gone out of business. Employees let go; doors locked. There’s an accompanying (unconfirmed) rumor that Fender is going to be buying them out.

Personally, I’m a fan of their designs and ergonomics, but I don’t own anything yet. A Z-Coil equipped G&L guitar is high on my G.A.S. list.

The Fender rumor- if true- has me conflicted. It’s possible that Fender would keep them as an operating subsidiary because they’ve done so before with Gretsch, Charvel, Jackson and others. But they have also purchased companies (like Tacoma) and quickly shuttered them.

Hell, there’s no guarantee ANYBODY in the instrument building biz wants G&L’s equipment and designs. So this could be the end of the line. (See Parker guitars.)

Huh, never heard of that brand before. Just got done reading the Wiki about them; interesting company!

Me and a friend are building the "Green Goblin". I got Dimarzio Chopper T’s in the Bridge and a middle strat pickup for the neck, the Notorious. That neck is great.

That looks like it could be fun! For rock/metal, I presume?
Yes, rock and metal. Unless you've heard them before or know a specific pickup you want, you never know what they're going to sound like, so we'll hear. Hoping it'll be done by the new year, but my friend is doing the soldering so he's working on it in fits and spurts. All said and done all the parts were maybe $700, I had some parts laying around. The neck and body were only ~$300, and surprisingly everything fit together. Only modifications that had to be made so far was that the machine head peg holes had to be reamed out wider to fit some GraphTech Ratio tuners I was planning on putting on something else. The fret ends need to be rounded a bit too. It's kind of cool building your own guitar with what you want, within reason. My friends addicted, he's on build #3. I don't have many regrets in life but one that still bugs me is this one. I took Building Technology in High School, which is learning house stick framing. I had 2 periods of shop every day. My teacher came to me and said "Kid, you're screwing around, let's do a final project that will engage you", he offered to help me build a guitar from scratch. Really wish I'd taken him up on that offer, not to mention the guitars I sold over the years.

Question! Is it ever acceptable to put a tremolo bar on a Telecaster? I say no. Floyd Rose, thats a hard negative. Bigsby's, yes, but I've never had one but I hear they are a PITA. But......this changes my mind. Wilkonson bridges are great. More stable than Fenders crap pot metal. Heard nothing but good things on HB, and the price v. specs is nuts. See for yourselves.

Pretty much, guitars are functional art and tools. So if you can’t FIND the tool you need, build it. (Or in my case, have it built.)

I’ve seen a bunch it teles with trems, and other stuff besides.

As for Wilkinsons themselves? Trevor Wilkinson made his bank selling quality, affordable aftermarket parts. There’s a reason some guitar companies- not just his own!- use Wilkinson parts as stock gear.
