the Epic Gimp

If he achieves epic in my world quickly (by sticking with just one class) then well yeah he's epic. He's powerful. He's also missed out on a bit.

A 21st level Fighter may have access to great feats, etc. etc. etc. But that's nothing a little intelligence can't overcome. Especially if you have a more versatile character.

Dunno...maybe next session I'll pregen a few Epic characters or shoulda-been-Epic characters, toss the sheets at my players and see what is actually better.

There can be power discrepancies just playing the RAW.
Yes a pure character still gets the advantage of getting there first, and actually rewards those that stick with one thing.

But put it in this prespective.
You learn stuff throughout life.
Some follow things their entire lives (the Straight 20 Class).
Others jump to and from never focusing (your multi-classers), by virtue of taken longer they never gain as quickly.

Your real life example just use years as levels.
Marine - 6
Programmer/DBA - 12
Gamer - 18

Total I would be epic, but not an "expert" in any.
