1.) What's the BEST spaceship design you've seen in any Sci-Fi offering?

2.) ...the Coolest?

3.) ...the Most Unique or Original?

4.) ...the Most Realistic?

5.) ...the Lamest?

(I'll toss my ideas in later in the thread so it doesn't influence the early answers...) :)

To properly respond I'd need that link that was posted either here or maybe Monte's board which has graphic pics of dozens of the various genre ships, from Star Wars, to Trek, to Robotech, to B5.

But I think the answer to the first 3 questions, just out of reflex, would have to be the Star Destroyer from Star Wars.

For the lamest, that would be the talking weird organic looking ship from a horrible space film in the 80's. Robert Vaugh played a mercenary "who just wanted a meal and a place to rest" along side John Boy in a space suit and George Papard in a cowboy space ship.

I think Michael Ironsides played a villain, who had his arm cut off, then replaced with an alien arm. The other aliens then used some sort of powers to make his alien arm try and kill himself.

Anybody remember this movie?

'Battle Beyond the Stars' - great stuff! :)

My favourite starships would be the Babylon-5 Earth Alliance Cruisers like the Agammemnon, they actually looked like they were developed through a design process that took into account the laws of physics & the available technology.

...

For category #5, I say it's the "pie tin lit on fire" spaceship from Plan 9 from Outer Space.

Now, I don't know if Ed Wood used an actual pie tin, but it really looks like two pie tins or paper plates attached to each other(remember making a "tambourine" like this in first grade or so?), doused in gasoline, lit on fire, and tossed (literally!) in front of the camera.

1. Anything from B5 every design was great.
2. Millennium Falcon
3. Mimbrai Angle Fish Battleships
4. 2001/2010
5. too many of those :)

Like to say there are tons of ships from the cartoons that were kick butt. :)

1. I'm partial to the Star Trek Ambassador class ships (The Enterprise-C was one of those - basically the original design on a much bigger scale)

2. Also Have to go with the Falcon on that one.

3. The Yamato from Star Blazers. Sure, outfitting a WWII Battleship for space travel may be absurd, but what a unique look!

4. The freighters seen on Enterprise, basically taking the concept of containerized shipping to the next level.

5. Hard to pick, soo many to choose from. Guess I'd have to say the one from the 3rd season trek episode that was invisible, even when sitting still on the planet, so that they didn't have to actually go to the effort to build one.

The Enterprise. Any version. Because no matter how badly damaged it is, it can be repaired in a matter of hours, and cannot be destroyed unless it self destructs. :D

2.) ...the Coolest?

Has to be the Falcon. The original Hunk-a-Junk.

3.) ...the Most Unique or Original?

The T.A.R.D.I.S.!

4.) ...the Most Realistic?

Well, given my avatar and the fact that I can't fit it in anywhere else, I'm putting in a vote for the original Red Dwarf model in this one. Looked like a big hunk of metal with an engine at one end.

5.) ...the Lamest?

How about the converted Camper Van they used in SpaceBalls?

I am not sure, but you might have meant this:

1.)
I really love the Babylon 5 Earth Cruisers. They look massive, powerful, and "realistic".
Similar notations go the FarScape Battlecruisers (both Peacekeepers and Scarrans).

2.)
Coolest? I wanted to say I can`t pick a single one, but now I see:
The EA Aurora Starfury is the most interesting and beatiful starfighter. I always loved to see all these little engines allowing it to steer around all ship axes... It made sense, and it looked cool.
I would buy any computer game including this ship model in a heart-beat. (Well, maybe not any, but I would give it at least a deeper look :) )
Speaking of computer games, I remember flying TIE Fighter (the real, basic one, not these heavily armed and armored like the Tie Interceptor or Tie Bomber, or even Tie Advanced or Tie Defender) was really fun. Flying evasive maneuvers as hell - a single hit could be your end. (*hit* "Flight System damaged: Repair time 00:13 seconds" "AAARgh" *hit* *boom*)

3.)
I think the design of Federation Starships (Enterprise & co) is most unique, though today, nobody will really recognize this - Startrek is an old franchise. :)

4.)
The most realistic seem to be the Space: Above and Beyond Hammerheads and the Babylon 5 Starfurys (and also the cruisers, I think)

5.)
Really bad design was the V`ger, (Startrek IV), I think. The Battlestar Galactica Fighters always looked ugly, but that might be a result of the time they were made.

The Serenity in Firefly.

2.) ...the Coolest?

With out a doubt the Falcon. Nothing is cooler. :)

3.) ...the Most Unique or Original?

I would say the Lexx was the most unique.

4.) ...the Most Realistic?

The Earth Force ships in B5.

5.) ...the Lamest?

The original romulan Bird of Prey from ST:TOS.

1) The USS Saratoga (Space: Above and Beyond)
2) The Andromeda (Star Blazers - nothing says "cool" like twin Wave Motion Guns)
3) The Sulaco (Aliens - known by our group as the "flying knife rack")
4) The Dropship (Aliens - yeah I know it's small craft, but it's functional and also almost ties for my coolest choice)
5) Man, there's so many...let me think on that one.
