The Fate of D20 Modern

I spent part of my childhood in an extremely poor, extremely rural area. Actually it was Montana, not that far from Calgary in Canada. There was a time in my life when the only way we could afford to eat meat was to kill it ourselves, and the only way we could afford bread was to mill hog feed and bake it ourselves. I spent another part of my youth in a gang and drug infested hovel of a small town, more than once we had someone try to break into the house only to be warded off by the sight and sound of the bolt of a 30-06 rifle being cycled. I am very fond of my right to own, carry and use a firearm as a result. And I have a hard time understanding how anyone could feel differently. But I suppose that not many people had that kind of childhood.

But back on topic: Yes, GI Joe is pretty much the best possible setting for modern, be it the current version that I love or a 4e'ified version.

Forget D20 Modern, bring back Alternity. I miss you Alternity.
Yeah, bring it back so I can hack it up like a dead horse all over again.

:devil::devil:

I hope ... nay, pray ... my guts and instinct are wrong but I think WotC is going with a different package than the d20 Modern brand name/label for their modern genre RPG.

Here's the thing people are missing, and what makes d20 Modern so much more awesome than alternity:

The fate of d20 Modern is in our hands.

I love Alternity and WISH DEARLY that I could support it. Since no one but Wizards can, its fate really is "sealed".

On the other hand, d20 Modern's isn't, and as long as folks (meaning players and customers) support it, never will be.

Play either Deadlands rules in the modern world, or a low PL (3 to 6) Mutants and Masterminds game (PL 6 is in the realm of super-spies and commandos). The Storyteller systems make a pretty gritty game but I personally detest the core mechanic. A True 20 game would come pretty close, though it still has roles.

Thats not a bad solution, unless you like Hit Points. If you like Hit Points Modern20 is a great solution too.

However, I really think a 4E derived Modern would be GREAT. Modern settings can have Roles just as well as Fantasy settings. Power Source + Role + Profession = Action Hero!

I'd like to see a 4E powered Urban Arcana, GI Joe, Transformers, Marvel SuperHeroes & Heroscape Setting books.

Personally, I'm a big fan of d20 Modern and am completely uninterested in 4e. Prior to the announcement of Paizo's Pathfinder, I was toying with house rules and the like to bring d20 Modern and D&D more in compliance. Now with some of the streamlining that Paizo's doing to 3.5, I'm shifting gears to see how Pathfinder can work.

Erik Mona (IIRC), stated that he's been playing with Pathfinder house rules in d20 Modern. He hasn't shared 'em yet, but I've been pushing and prodding to see this.

That said, I did see a 3rd party person do a d20 Modern reinvention (just the basics) using the Star Wars Saga Edition. I liked what I saw but like I said - just the basics.

Well

Well, so far I am making my own Future 4e game. Pretty much same everything with new (read converted) weapons from the old edition. Made some new armors, and a new armor system which gives higher bonuses against ranged, but less bonuses against melee (feel for the setting, is that melee has made a comeback due to close quarters fighting, as well as defensive technology becoming extremely potent)

I've heard some time next year we'll see 4e modern d20. But I can't confirm that. My guess is they've been working on it, in the time we've not seen any modern d20 releases.

I'd like to see a 4E powered Urban Arcana, GI Joe, Transformers, Marvel SuperHeroes & Heroscape Setting books.
With the exception of Urban Arcana above, I personally do not like WotC publishing licensed d20 Modern products from third-party IP owners, including WotC's parent company, Hasbro, current IP owner of GI JOE and Transformers.
