I spent part of my childhood in an extremely poor, extremely rural area. Actually it was Montana, not that far from Calgary in Canada. There was a time in my life when the only way we could afford to eat meat was to kill it ourselves, and the only way we could afford bread was to mill hog feed and bake it ourselves. I spent another part of my youth in a gang and drug infested hovel of a small town, more than once we had someone try to break into the house only to be warded off by the sight and sound of the bolt of a 30-06 rifle being cycled. I am very fond of my right to own, carry and use a firearm as a result. And I have a hard time understanding how anyone could feel differently. But I suppose that not many people had that kind of childhood.
But back on topic: Yes, GI Joe is pretty much the best possible setting for modern, be it the current version that I love or a 4e'ified version.
