D&D 5E (2014) The Fifth City - Episode 1: The Gathering

Korgon takes a few more bites of cheese and bread before heading back to his chair by the fire with a glass of wine. He listens carefully to Amisi's story.

"It may not be anyone new to the city though, the timing could be related to something else. That would be the best way to avoid suspicion, strike when there seems to be no need or reason. But with no other leads, I think that any planned arrival or recent arrival of person's of note, would be a good place to start. Of course that means our new friend Rhal could either be the assassin or the target." says Korgon grinning at the dragonborn as he gets up to refill his glass.

Of course that means our new friend Rhal could either be the assassin or the target." says Korgon grinning at the dragonborn as he gets up to refill his glass.

Rhal gives Korgon a low growl in return. "I most certainly am not," he says to the man's back, the dragonborn's head-crest standing high. "Amisi," he says, addressing the Corps Magi, "you mustn't take such accusations seriously. My motivations are beyond reproach, and investigating me would only take your attention away from a real threat."

"We shall speak again at dinner," Rhal continues, "in the meantime I will ruminate on your problem."

Korgon chuckles at dragonborn's indignation "Calm down Rhal. Put that crest down before you hurt yourself. It wasn't an accusation. I was just pointing out that anyone could be in consideration. And for the record, you can only assure her that you aren't the assassin, there is no way to know for certain you are not the target. Here have some wine and cool down. Think out loud down here. With us." says Korgon gesturing to himself and Amisi as he brings a second glass of wine over to Rhal.

Amisi tries not to giggle at the dragonborn. She did feel a little sorry for him, he was going to have a tough adjustment getting used to the city and being around people. "Do not fear Rhal, I can see already that you are a trustworthy man and I have no reason to suspect you of anything but being a decent person, as you are willing to help me with my dilemma." She finally takes a sip of her wine and breathes. "Yes, let us think on it a little longer, perhaps something will come to us. And remember what I said about some of the information I passed on earlier. I do not want to get either of you in trouble," she said, leaving the rest of her comment about Korgon to herself.

Felix and Markus Working Overtime

The Red District docks are reserved for the ships of the nobility of various races, as well as the appointed ambassadors of all races and other VIPs of various sorts. As such, they are decidedly more elegant and well maintained than the Green District docks from which Markus and Felix had just come.

The dock set aside for the Deva Ambassador's arrival was isolated, as per the Devas' instructions. The ships of the Deva had no crews, being operated completely by magic...at least according to rumor. In truth, no one knew what to expect, but Lord Clarion wanted security to be tight around the ambassador's arrival. He also wanted a formal greeting party consisting of himself, Lady Ivarra, and the elven, dragonborn, and tiefling ambassadors. Felix was well acquainted with the tiefling ambassador, Londo Mollari, as the often drunk tiefling noble frequented the same gambling dens Felix did. Mollari had even bought Felix a drink once as Felix was the only one left in the bar near closing time when the ambassador decided to share yet another tale of the "good old days of the tiefling republic."

OOC: Feel free to improvise and embellish a bit when describing what security measures you intend to take. Having been put in charge of this detail, Markus and Felix have a contingent of 25 city guards at their disposal as well as two hippogriff riders and a patrol ship and its crew. You'll also need to inform the ambassadors.

I will have more elaboration going on here, but general gist is this:
Markus excuses himself at the docks. He wanted to go check with the city records to review if any underground access existed, such as sewers, that would give access to any protagonists. He states as such to Felix and invites him to join to brain storm for any other precautions. Before leaving he discusses some ideas on gathering possible activity in the area, "I recommend we set up a 4 man watch in uniform, and 4 more to return to their bunks to get in some dirty street cloths to keep an unofficial eye out as well. Maybe we should send another 4 out to speak to any street connections and 8 to return to their bunks for a night shift of the same as the first 8.

There is to be 2 in uniform as a reserve nearby. We should keep the remaining 3 to stay with us as a protective detail. What do you think?" While felix contemplates Markus' recommendations Markus asses the friendships withing the guardsmen while also taking notce of any off reactions or looks by the men - possibly of any of them that might potentially of less then good character. He does not need any one of them pulling off any acts of trouble.

patrol ship and hippogriff riders:

He will have the hippogriff riders patrol over the docks and bay 1 hour on, 1 hour off. the patrol paterns will be left up to the riders as they know the area by air and knew their mounts' capabilities. The ship's captain will likewise be left to his/her discretion but will be told to include the shore line of the city plus 10 miles up and down.

Felix stands on the reds docks and looks about considering Markus' plans. His eyes narrow to slits almost closed as he turns inward picturing the arrival in his head. "I think you have the bones of a good plan there. We could find a quiet restaurant with a private room and assemble the ambassadors and worthies there until the ship is actually arriving. The Hippogriff riders can escort the ship in and we can have uniformed men standing here. The 3 you've identified as personal escort can come down with the ambassadors. We'll have the four undercover as well. The night shift reserve will likely need to be on duty the day of as well. We can put them in windows and on rooftops in any spots where an assassin might hide." He points to nearby buildings. "The four we will have had doing investigative work can be stationed along the route from the docks to the Deva ambassador's destination. The two reserve men will need a good spot where they can respond quickly to any trouble here or along the way. One of us should be here on the docks and the other should come down with the ambassadors, then we'll stay with the Deva ambassador until we get him settled at his destination. In the meantime I think your researching plans is good idea. I'm going to prowl around here a bit and then I believe we were invited to dinner. Do you see in obvious holes in the plan?"

OOC: Once the conversation is complete. Felix will look around for likely ambush points and suspicious characters hanging about.

"It would be best to let you be the face at the arrival. You need to take lead due to any possible ill feelings between corp and the elves.I will stay with the other ambassadors and guide them down. Otherwise, I have nothing else to add."

**I am going to say we implament these plans, Markus will return home upon finishing paruseing things in the city hall planning and zoning commission.**

Lenya and the Elven Ambassador

Delenn returns to her gardening as she speaks, "Valen said that the people who come into our lives in times of danger are either our greatest allies or are worst enemies. I think you should find out what you have made for yourself today...friends...or enemies."

OOC: If Lenya wishes to take the ambassador's advice and seek out the others, she'll arrive in the middle of dinner (i.e., whenever you get a post in after the others start).

Dinner at the Mage House

Adail and his staff prepare a fairly generous meal of shrimp, crabcakes, assorted fruit, potatoes with goat cheese along, and a red wine for Amisi, Markus, and their guests. Markus and Felix arrive just in time for a quick bath and a change of clothes before dinner is set.

OOC: The dinner conversation is entirely up to you. I will interject with Adail answering the door when Lenya arrives, if she chooses to do so.

"So Markus and Felix, how was the rest of your day? Anything exciting happen? We pretty much just came back here and talked." She casually sips her wine, "By the way Markus I set up Rhal and Korgon in rooms. I know you don't mind," she grins, looking at him over the top of her glass.

"Ungh" he grunts. He seems a bit lost in thought, some couple hundred miles off in thought. Not some mere vacant thought - its more like gears grinding kind of thought.

"We'll take that for assent." says Korgon getting up. He grabs a glass and places a heavy hand on Markus' should and steers him to a seat, providing gentle pressure to get him to sit before placing the glass in his hand. "Here friend, drink. Your mind seems out to sea upon the waves. Bring it home to a safe port and share your burden."
