The First Rule Of Gencon Is:

It can get bad with gamers. There's some bad apples that ruin it for the rest of the bunch.

Anther thing apart from the clean T-shirts - Use deoderant.

I've never been to a con in my life. I've met some pretty stinky people, ranging from those on public transportation to a Greyhound bus station, none of which were as bad as some of the stories I've heard. Are Gen Con gamers that unclean they need a primer on showering/clothes washing?

qstor is right, the smells at Cons can get pretty bad.

I haven'tmaed it to GenCon but have attended multiple in Ca and several in Tx, and everytime you'll run across that smell.

The worse I have seen was at a con where a guy was talking about how he was spending the weekend of the Con in the back of his pickup truck in the parking lot (which was bad) and then he mentioned he had come straight to the con from work. (he apparently was a garbage collector.)

Along with the smell is the total lack of respect some people seem to have for others game materials. For example, the same guy from above was chowing down on a chili dog at the table, and procceded to spill chili on my budies PHB, and didn't do a thing about it, just kinda looked shocked when he grabed the book to try and clean it.

Ah, Cons gotta love'm!

Actually at Gen Con and at Origns I didn't notice that many people in need of hygene. They were there but it wasn't bad at past cons.

While I noticed it at GenCon last year, I've been places where it was much, much worse. You really want to get bowled over by the unwashed masses? Try attending a the World Science Fiction Convention, in whatever city it is in on any given year. Some of the worst offenders I have ever seen were at the WorldCon in Baltimore a few years ago (98 or 99). We actually had to have 3 people escorted out of the HarperPrism company party due to the stench and unhealthy behavior (like eating food barehanded off of the serving trays, and brushing food crumbs out of their beards over the buffet table). How they got into the party I don't know, but they caused quite a distraction while they were there.

Look, I wouldn't have started this thread if it weren't true. I've been to several GenCons now, and there have always been gross violators. Furthermore, I'm the type of guy who will call them out, too. If you're going to force your rank, fetid pallor upon me, I'm going to call you the filthy savage you truly are! Some favourite lines:

"Dude, find yourself a stick of right guard, fast!"
"What was your name again? I was distracted by your overwhelming B.O."
"Whoa, someone at this table smells soooo bad. I think it's time for you to run a shower based solo-quest, now!"

Edit: Oops - thought I was still in the Why No GENCON East thread...

Hmmm... I'd be very interested to read about the arguments for/against a GenCon East...

Can you direct me to the thread... I went back 20 pages but didn't see it...

THANKS!
