The First Rule Of Gencon Is:

I won't be making it to GenCon, since I'm on the east coast, but I do attend Otacon yearly. Anime people can get pretty bad, but the worst is at the "Rave" they hold. There is litterally a tangible wall of stench entering that room. This year, my friends and I are considering purchasing some of those tree shaped ornemantal car air fresheners, and passing them out. Last year, we gave out fliers:

"SOAP: $2
DEODERANT: $3
LACK OF B.O.: PRICELESS"

I haven't been to a Con yet but this thread and all the other stories I've heard are just unreal. How can that many people just not care about being clean? It doesn't even make sense to me. It has to be exaggerations...right?

Imagine a lot of obese people with long hair and jeans and t-shirts who did take showers the previous morning. Now have those folks walk a bit more than they are used to, to enter an event they are very excited about and ta-da BO!

I have some friends who bring an extra t-shirt and some deoderant for the afternoon sessions. It's really not a bad idea.

Most of Otacon is fine. But in some of the video rooms, and ALWAYS in the rave room... whew. The rave room REALLY IS THAT BAD. When I said a tangible wall of olfactory horror, I meant it. You approach the area, and you start smelling something fowl. You walk up to the door, your ears are asaulted by sound, and the foulness gets a little worse. You cross a line, a threshold, if you will, and actually enter the room, and your nose explodes. What -I- don't understand is how ANYONE, even the people PRODUCING the stench, can possibly stand to be around themselves. It's worse than anything I've ever smelled before.

Mostly things are okay, but the rave room is horrid. A few video rooms could use some febreeze, but are tolerable for reasonable periods of time (after which the stench builds up and you just have to get out of there). Hygiene is part of it, but another part is the fact that there's a very large number of people placed in a small contained space, often wearing big furry costumes. In the middle of the summer. The ventilation just isn't strong enough to handle all those people, and then when they walk outside the convention center to get food, that just compounds the issue.

And then there are those who just don't shower, don't wear deoderant. And it only takes one or two to fill a room, esspecially if they hang around that room for hours. Otacon has several thousand people show up. If even 1% don't shower, that WILL be a lot of stench. And the percentage of non-bathers is likely higher. Most of us are fine... it's just the sheer numbers.

I've not really noticed it myself..... even in the heart of Dragoncon in Atlanta in the summer which would equal major stench! But then I'm not in the gaming/anime rooms so it may be "stenchy" in those rooms....

Well I tend to be quite active for someone who's supposedly a gamer and I shower sometimes twice a day if I get really sweaty...maybe it has to do with body type or diet, because I have gone for a couple days without showering before and I don't radiate a vile stench. I always get plenty of water, though and wear clean clothes...so I dunno. It just doesn't seem that hard to clean yourself to a tolerable smell, so I have to hope that most of the real stinkers are that way because they just have really nasty-smelling and powerful sweat odor. *shakes head* Crazy stuff.

I'm not buying the "predisposition to stench" argument. In my judgment, those that smell awful do so from lack of hygene, daily care, or attention to detail.

That notwithstanding, I don't really care WHY one might stink. Just make it go away!!!
